No one knew exactly how the long-haired gray cat had ended up there or how she had managed to survive for so long. She was lying helplessly on the sidewalk of a Cairo street, unable to use her back legs, and it was obvious that she urgently needed medical treatment and a safe place to recover.
Because the cat was so comfortable around people, rescuers believed she may once have belonged to a family before being abandoned. Another possibility was that she had been living outdoors for some time and had only recently become paralyzed. Either way, surviving alone on the streets in such a vulnerable condition would have been extremely difficult.
When volunteers from How’s Paws discovered her, the frightened but gentle cat immediately began meowing at them. She allowed the rescuers to approach, touch her, and comfort her without putting up a fight. It seemed almost as if she understood that these people had come to help.
When the volunteers brought a carrier to take her to safety, the cat calmly allowed one of them to lift her inside. They carefully settled her onto a soft blanket, and she showed no resistance as they prepared to take her to the veterinarian.
At the clinic, she remained remarkably cooperative. She tolerated the examinations and even allowed the rescuers to give her a bath without struggling.
The veterinary tests and X-rays brought some unexpected news. There were no broken bones or obvious injuries that could explain why she couldn’t move her back legs. Based on the results, the veterinarians believed that nerve damage was likely responsible for her paralysis.
For now, no one could say whether the beautiful cat would ever regain movement in her back legs. Only time and continued care would reveal how much recovery might be possible.
During her first few days in rescue, she appeared understandably discouraged and ate very little. But after receiving rest, warmth, food, and plenty of attention, she gradually began showing signs of improvement.
She still had a long road ahead, but for the first time in a while, this helpless cat was no longer alone. She had people caring for her, a safe place to recover, and a chance at the better life she had been desperately calling for.
