When a man noticed a mother cat and her three kittens living in his yard in London, he began watching over the little family. He regularly left food out for them and wasn’t initially too worried about their situation. But one day, he noticed that one of the tiny kittens had something dangerously stuck around her neck.
The kitten had somehow managed to get the top of a broken glass jar caught around her neck. The sharp glass was pressing into her fur, and the man immediately realized that she needed professional help. He quickly contacted rescuers, and soon the RSPCA and Battersea Dogs & Cats Home joined forces to help the frightened kitten.
Paige Havlin, an animal rescue officer with the RSPCA, arrived at the man’s home and helped safely secure the mother cat and all three kittens. She then transported the family to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, where staff carefully began working to free the trapped kitten.
“Thankfully, with two pairs of hands, we were able to carefully wiggle the kitten’s legs through the glass jar and then slide it over her neck and off,” Havlin said in a press release. “She had a few superficial cuts but, miraculously, no major injuries.”
The brave little kitten was named Mason, and rescuers were relieved to discover that she was doing well despite the frightening experience. The entire family was able to remain together while recovering at Battersea, thanks to the man who noticed Mason’s condition and made sure the cats received help.
“Mason and her littermates are recovering remarkably well following their frightening ordeal,” Grace Oliver, cattery team leader at Battersea, said in a press release. “Battersea’s vets fully assessed the family when they arrived at our London center and found that, amazingly, Mason had suffered no significant injuries.”
The other cats were named Mama Moustache, Baby Moustache and Kilner. Now, the rescue team is working toward finding loving permanent homes for each of them, where they can continue growing, exploring, and simply enjoying life as cats.
“Our feline experts have since been working to build the kittens’ confidence, giving them the time and space they need to settle and thrive,” Oliver said.
