A driver was shocked when he suddenly noticed a car traveling down the street with a dog being dragged behind it.
Johnny Cheng was stopped at an intersection in Honolulu, Hawaii, when an SUV passed in front of him. Behind the vehicle was a black-and-white dog, apparently attached to the rear bumper by something resembling a leash.
The frightening sight immediately caught Cheng’s attention. He and several other Good Samaritans reacted quickly, determined to stop the vehicle and help the dog.
Cheng later uploaded footage from his car camera to YouTube and described how he witnessed the disturbing scene while waiting at a stop sign.
The footage shows Cheng’s vehicle stopped at the intersection as the SUV passes by, with the dog being pulled along behind it. Cheng immediately followed the vehicle and eventually pulled toward the side of the road.
In the video, the dog can be seen getting back onto his feet while the woman driving the SUV gets out of the vehicle. Another person who witnessed what was happening quickly runs toward the dog to check on him before the footage ends.
However, Cheng later explained in the video’s description that several people had already been trying to get the driver’s attention.
“I joined with two other cars [to] chase her try to stop her car,” Cheng wrote. “While chasing we kept pressing the horn to attract her attention. But she does not seem to hear at all.”
The witnesses continued following the SUV until they finally managed to get the driver’s attention.
“Finally we stop her at the red light. She came out released the dog and put into the back seat drove off without saying anything.”
At that moment, Cheng wasn’t sure whether the dog had been dragged intentionally or whether the situation was simply a terrible accident. While he and the other drivers were trying to catch up with the SUV, Cheng was also calling 911 to report what he was seeing.
A few days later, however, Cheng received information from the Honolulu Police Department that helped explain what had happened.
According to the police, the woman took her dog directly to a veterinarian after the incident. That information suggested that she may not have realized the dog was still attached to the vehicle and that the frightening incident was likely accidental.
Thankfully, the dog received veterinary attention after being rescued from the road.
For Cheng, the experience also carried an important reminder for anyone who travels with a dog.
“Do not tie your dog to your door handle or to the rear of your car because you may forget when you driving,” he warned.
The terrifying moment could have ended much worse, but the quick reaction of Cheng and the other motorists helped bring the dog to safety.
