Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) warned readers to prepare for a “Huge Hankie Alert” before sharing this incredible rescue story. Their volunteers had spent an entire week searching for two missing dogs, Tillie and Phoebe, when they finally received a promising call.
A local resident explained that for several days, a reddish-colored dog had been appearing on their property. Each time, the dog would approach them briefly before disappearing back into a nearby ravine.
The information gave the rescuers a small reason to hope, so they headed into the ravine to investigate.

After searching through the area for some time, the rescuers finally heard the sound they had been waiting for all week.
When they called out Tillie’s name, a quiet bark came from somewhere nearby.
They continued following the sound and soon discovered Tillie lying beside an old cistern. Her head was resting against the concrete wall, and the moment the rescuers saw where she was positioned, their hearts sank.
They immediately realized what it could mean.
Phoebe was likely trapped inside the cistern.
Everyone held their breath as they carefully looked over the edge, hoping and praying they would find the missing dog alive.
Fortunately, their fears were replaced with relief.
Phoebe was still alive, perched on a section of broken concrete rubble inside the cistern that was keeping her safely above the water.

The rescue team soon discovered something even more touching.
For almost an entire week, Tillie had remained beside Phoebe, refusing to leave her friend alone.
The only time Tillie separated from Phoebe was for a few brief moments each day when she left the ravine to search for help. Then she would return to the cistern and stay beside her trapped companion.
The rescuers expressed their gratitude to Joe Curiel, whose observations helped reveal that something was wrong, and they praised Tillie for her extraordinary loyalty.
Her actions showed just how powerful the bond between two dogs can be.

After spending nearly a week outside in cold and difficult conditions, both Tillie and Phoebe were finally brought to safety. Despite being hungry and exposed to the elements, the two dogs were doing well.
