For nearly five decades, Moon knew a life of hard labor, heavy chains, and long days carrying enormous logs.
The 55-year-old Asian elephant had spent most of her life working at a logging camp in Thailand. Years of carrying heavy loads had left physical and emotional marks, but despite everything she had endured, Moon remained gentle and calm.

Then, finally, her life began to change.
Guy from Planting Peace had made it his mission to rescue elephants every year on his birthday. This time, he worked to negotiate Moon’s freedom and bring her out of the logging camp.
When Moon’s chains were finally removed, she took her first steps without the restraints that had controlled her for so many years.
At her new sanctuary, she was introduced to simple pleasures she had been denied for most of her life. One of the first things she enjoyed was a relaxing dirt bath, freely covering herself in the soil.
But the sweetest moment came when another rescued elephant approached her.

As Moon explored her new surroundings, the elephant gently reached toward her, almost as if offering a quiet welcome to her new home.
Her caregivers soon noticed other signs that Moon was settling in. She began flapping her ears and wagging her tail, showing just how much happier and more comfortable she had become.
After spending almost her entire life working in chains, Moon was finally free.
Now she is surrounded by people who care for her, a peaceful sanctuary, and other elephants who can share this new chapter with her.
For Moon, freedom came late in life — but she finally has the safe and peaceful life she always deserved.
