Just seven months ago, Alex was so sick that no one knew whether she would survive long enough to celebrate her first birthday. The young German Shepherd arrived at a rescue in October 2024 in heartbreaking condition. She was extremely underweight, covered in mange, and urgently needed medical treatment.

Alex was rushed to an emergency veterinary hospital, where she spent four days receiving intensive care. Once her condition became stable, she was transferred to a foster home where she could begin the long road to recovery.
While Alex was at the hospital, veterinarians discovered another serious problem. X-rays showed that both of her hips were damaged. The unexpected diagnosis meant that Alex faced an even longer recovery, but her rescuers were determined to give her a chance at a normal life.
The team first focused on helping her gain strength so she would be healthy enough for surgery. Around Thanksgiving and Christmas, Alex underwent two separate FHO surgeries to repair her damaged hips.
The procedures were successful, but recovery required patience. For months, Alex had to limit her activity while her body healed. Although she desperately wanted to run and play like a normal puppy, her foster family carefully watched over her.

Eventually, veterinarians confirmed that both hips were healing properly. Alex was finally allowed to enjoy more of the activities she loved.
Unfortunately, another setback came just as the rescue was preparing for her move to Massachusetts and adoption journey. Alex tested positive for heartworm.

It was especially heartbreaking because she had tested negative when she first arrived. However, heartworm infections can take months to become detectable. At only 10 months old, Alex once again had to face treatment and strict activity restrictions.
For a playful and energetic puppy, staying calm was not easy. Still, Alex continued to fight through every challenge.

Finally, she received a clean bill of health just in time for a milestone that once seemed uncertain—her first birthday.
The celebration was more than just a birthday party. It represented everything Alex had survived. The fragile puppy who once struggled with mange and serious hip problems was now running, playing, and enjoying life with her foster friends.

After overcoming one obstacle after another, Alex is finally looking toward a brighter future. Now, all this brave German Shepherd needs is a loving forever family to give her the happy life she deserves.
