Mark and I had been married for three years when we finally discovered that we were expecting the baby we had always dreamed of. We were overjoyed, but our happiness lasted only a few months. During my pregnancy, Mark received devastating news: he had a serious illness, and his doctors believed he had only a short time left.
The thought that he might never meet our daughter was heartbreaking.
One evening, we sat together on the porch. Mark gently placed his hand on my growing belly and quietly told me that he wanted to become an organ donor if his organs were healthy enough after his death.
I immediately asked him not to talk about dying while our baby was moving inside me.
But Mark looked at my stomach and said, “That’s exactly why I need to talk about it. If I can’t watch her grow up, maybe I can help someone else have more time with the people they love.”
His condition worsened much faster than we expected. By my eighth month of pregnancy, Mark struggled with even the simplest daily activities. I helped him get dressed, brought him things he needed, and tried to hide how frightened I was.
Then, several weeks before his death, Mark began asking to speak privately with his doctor. Whenever I asked what they had discussed, he simply squeezed my hand and told me there was something he needed to arrange and asked me to trust him.
I had always known Mark as an open and honest person, so his secrecy surprised me. Still, I respected his wishes.
Eventually, Mark passed away in the hospital with my hand in his.
After his death, I signed the final paperwork to honor his decision to donate his organs. I was devastated, but I knew this was something he had chosen himself.
As I was leaving the hospital, his doctor suddenly hurried after me.
“Please wait,” he said.
He was holding a small envelope behind his back.
“Mark gave me this several weeks ago,” the doctor explained. “He specifically told me that you should receive it only after he was gone.”
My heart began racing.
The doctor handed me the envelope. My name was written across the front in Mark’s familiar handwriting.
I held it tightly, tears filling my eyes. I had no idea what Mark had left inside, but I knew that whatever it was, he had been waiting until his final moment to share it with me
