Orphaned Baby Elephant Forms a Heartwarming Bond With a Sheep Who Becomes His Mom

An orphaned baby elephant has formed a remarkable bond with an unexpected companion: a sheep named Lammie.

Amanzi, a young elephant receiving care at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre in South Africa, had a difficult beginning. But amid the challenges of his early life, he found comfort in Lammie, affectionately known as “Mother-sheep.”

The two have grown so close that they rarely want to be apart.

The centre shared a heartwarming video showing the unusual pair enjoying each other’s company.

In the footage, Amanzi gently rests his trunk against Lammie’s back before the two bring their heads close together. They walk side by side, staying near one another as though neither wants to lose sight of the other.

Their gentle interactions offer a touching glimpse of the connection they have developed.

Lammie’s affection has given Amanzi companionship during a period when he has faced considerable difficulties.

His troubles began in February, when the young elephant became trapped in a drainage ditch near a dam belonging to the Phalaborwa Copper mine in Limpopo, northeastern South Africa.

Mine workers came to his rescue and initially waited for his herd to return. However, Amanzi was suffering from dehydration and exhaustion, and the workers eventually had to take him to an animal rescue facility for help.

Amanzi was transported by truck to receive the care he urgently needed. After attempts to have him accepted by other elephants proved unsuccessful, the nonprofit organization Elephants Alive stepped in to help look after him.

Unfortunately, further efforts to introduce him to a herd also failed. The other elephants reportedly bullied him, and his condition deteriorated as he became underweight and dehydrated.

He was eventually transferred to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, where caregivers could focus on his recovery.

Despite the care he received, dehydration remained a serious concern for the young elephant.

His condition required close monitoring, and the team continued working to support him through the difficult early stages of his recovery.

The centre later shared another concerning update about Amanzi’s health.

He had lost his appetite for milk formula and needed to be rehydrated again under the supervision of veterinarian Dr. Peter Rodgers.

The team explained that it was consulting elephant orphanages in Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as experienced caregivers in Botswana who had raised older elephant calves.

Unfortunately, the advice they received reflected the unpredictable nature of caring for a vulnerable young elephant. Periods of apparent strength could be followed by setbacks before the calf became more stable.

From a veterinary perspective, his treatment focused on managing his symptoms and supporting him one day at a time.

Meanwhile, people following Amanzi’s journey continued sending messages of encouragement. The video of him and Lammie brought an outpouring of affection from viewers who were touched by their unusual friendship.

Lammie Has Befriended Other Orphaned Animals

Amanzi wasn’t the first young animal to find comfort in Lammie’s company.

Back in 2014, the centre shared footage of Lammie playing with an orphaned rhinoceros named Gertjie, who was affectionately nicknamed Little G.

Assistant curator Karien Smit recorded the pair’s playful interactions to show the special bond that had developed between them.

In the video, Little G watches as Lammie runs up and down a winding dirt road. The energetic sheep moves in different directions, and the young rhino tries to imitate her, creating several amusing moments.

The two friends run around together, occasionally bumping into each other as they play without a care in the world.

Their friendship demonstrated how companionship can develop between animals that are very different from one another.

Now, Lammie’s connection with Amanzi has offered another touching example of that same gentle nature.

The little elephant has faced difficult beginnings, failed attempts to join a herd and ongoing health concerns. Yet he has also found a friend who stays close and offers companionship when he needs it most.

Although Lammie’s affection cannot replace the specialist medical care Amanzi requires, their bond adds a comforting presence to his daily life.

Their story is a reminder that friendship can emerge in unexpected places. Sometimes, the most surprising companions become a source of comfort during life’s hardest moments.
