When Stray Rescue of St. Louis received photos of a dog hiding in the woods, the rescue team knew they had to act quickly. A Good Samaritan had spotted the frightened animal while walking her own dogs and contacted the organization for help. The rescuers immediately began searching, but after hours without success, darkness was approaching, and they were running out of time.

Just when they were about to give up, they discovered a tiny figure curled up among the trees. The dog was weak, frightened, and desperately in need of help. The team named him Matlock.
Matlock was painfully thin, with a serious wound on his side. Donna, one of the rescuers, approached him gently and offered him a snack. The food caught his attention, and he slowly responded to her kindness. However, he was still too frightened to leave the woods on his own.

Knowing they could not abandon him, Donna carefully lifted Matlock into her arms and began carrying him toward the car. The journey was far from easy. They still had approximately a mile to travel, and darkness was quickly settling in. Despite the exhausting walk, Donna refused to give up. She continued carrying the fragile dog until they finally reached safety.

Matlock was immediately given the chance to receive the medical care he desperately needed. Unfortunately, his examination revealed devastating news. The tumor on his side was cancerous, and the disease had already spread to his organs. Although he began gaining weight and received chemotherapy, his body had endured too much.

Thankfully, Matlock’s final days were filled with love. His hospice foster family welcomed him into their home, where he enjoyed comfortable beds, affectionate cuddles, and the company of his new canine siblings. For perhaps the first time in a long while, he knew what it meant to belong to a family.
In December 2024, Stray Rescue shared the heartbreaking news that Matlock had passed away peacefully in his hospice foster home. His foster mother, Ashley, stayed beside him during his final moments, making sure he was not alone.

Matlock’s life ended far too soon, but his final chapter was filled with compassion and dignity. Donna carried him out of the woods, and his rescuers gave him something priceless: a home, a family, and the love every animal deserves. His story reminds us that even a short time filled with kindness can make an unforgettable difference.
