Hollywood romances are common, but genuine friendships between co-stars are equally delightful for millions of fans. Sometimes, the connections actors build while working together continue long after filming ends. The cast of the iconic television series Friends is one example of this kind of lasting bond.
Another well-known friendship in Hollywood is the one between Mark Harmon and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Both actors have made it clear that their relationship has never been romantic. Instead, they have always shared mutual affection, respect, and a genuine friendship.
Both Stars Have Enjoyed Long-Lasting Marriages
Mark Harmon and his wife, Pam Dawber, have been married for more than three decades, maintaining a strong relationship throughout the years.
When asked about the secret behind his successful marriage, Harmon explained that there was no special formula. He joked that he had to kiss plenty of frogs before finding the right person. However, he believes their age when they married may have helped.
“We were both in our 30s when we got married, so hopefully the stupid stuff, we did earlier. That’s probably the closest I have to what the key is,” he told People.
Harmon and Dawber met at a party hosted by a mutual friend. They married in 1987 in an intimate ceremony at a chapel at Harvard-Westlake School in Studio City, California, attended by close friends and family.
By that time, both had established acting careers. Harmon had appeared in 240 Robert, Flamingo Road, The Love Boat, and the drama St. Elsewhere. Dawber became widely known through the television series Mork & Mindy, where she starred alongside the late Robin Williams.
Speaking about Williams in a 2020 interview with ABC, she recalled his charm and humor, explaining that his talent was immediately apparent.
Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber Have Two Sons
The couple has two sons, Sean Harmon and Ty Christian Harmon.
After becoming a mother, Dawber chose to step back from her career to spend more time with her family. Although she appeared in some television projects, she avoided maintaining a regular acting schedule.
Dawber has also expressed the view that when both partners are deeply involved in acting, the demanding schedules and professional commitments can make maintaining a relationship more challenging.
Why the Couple Keeps Their Private Lives Away From the Spotlight
Harmon and Dawber have consistently preferred to keep their family life private rather than seek public attention.
“It’s not even a choice. It’s who we are,” Harmon explained years later. He said that they spend much of their time at home and that neither he nor their sons are particularly interested in social media.
Although Harmon and Dawber have both made successful careers in entertainment, he explained that living their private lives publicly has never felt natural to them.
Jamie Lee Curtis shares a similar approach to privacy. She married Christopher Guest in 1984, and they have remained together. The couple has two adopted children.
According to an essay Curtis wrote for Oprah.com, she first noticed Guest, best known for his role in This Is Spinal Tap, while looking through Rolling Stone magazine.
She recalled seeing his photograph and telling a friend that she was going to marry him, even though she had never met him.
They Exchanged Numbers Through Their Agents, but He Never Called
Curtis and Guest exchanged contact information through their agents, but Guest did not call her. Curtis eventually moved on and began dating someone else.
Later, however, she unexpectedly spotted him at a restaurant.
Curtis recalled looking up and seeing Guest sitting three tables away. He waved as if acknowledging that he was the man she had contacted, and she waved back to indicate that she was the woman who had called him.
A few minutes later, as Guest prepared to leave, he gave her a casual wave before walking away. Their unexpected encounter became part of the story of how their relationship eventually developed.
Jamie Lee Curtis and Mark Harmon Starred Together in Freaky Friday
Curtis and Harmon appeared together in the 2003 hit film Freaky Friday.
Director Mark Waters once explained that Harmon became an option after Tom Selleck and Annette Bening were no longer attached to the project. Waters recalled that Harmon had initially been excited about the opportunity to work with Bening, and he stepped away when she left.
Harmon was eventually considered for the role. At the time, he was still regarded as a heartthrob, with many female fans admiring him.
The film became a major success, earning approximately $160.8 million worldwide, while Curtis received praise for her performance.
Over the years, Curtis has earned numerous accolades, including two Golden Globe Awards, a British Academy Film Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
When Harmon was starring in NCIS, Curtis joined the series during its ninth season, playing Dr. Samantha Ryan.
Mark Harmon Was Delighted to Work With Her Again
Harmon spoke warmly about Curtis’s appearance on NCIS, describing her as a wonderful person to have on set.
He explained that he had known her for a long time and that the rest of the cast enjoyed working with her. He also praised the late Gary Glasberg for creating a role that encouraged Curtis to join the show.
Harmon described Curtis as a rare talent and a genuinely good person, adding that everyone had enjoyed having her around.

On another occasion, Harmon expressed his excitement about Curtis joining the cast, saying that everyone was happy to welcome her to their television “sandbox.”
He again praised Glasberg for developing a character that made Curtis eager to participate. Harmon noted that she had enjoyed the experience and believed she would say the same herself.
Curtis shared his enthusiasm about their reunion and was equally happy to work alongside her friend again.

“I’m not going to lie to you and say that this is a horrible, difficult job to ‘play’ with him. I’m happy to have it,” Curtis told Entertainment Tonight.
She added that Harmon sometimes made her blush because he was such a sweet person. Curtis made it clear that she was very fond of him and believed he felt the same way about her.
More recently, Curtis has discussed plans for a sequel to Freaky Friday. Whether Mark Harmon will appear in the follow-up, however, remains to be seen.
