A Catholic priest in Ecuador was delivering Mass when a tragic incident unfolded in front of his congregation.
The service was being livestreamed, capturing the moment the unexpected accident occurred.
What happened next sent worshippers rushing to help their priest.
Heavy Crucifix Suddenly Breaks Loose
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez was celebrating an evening Mass at Perpetuo Socorro Church in Guayaquil on October 17 when a heavy crucifix suddenly detached from the wall above him.
The service was being livestreamed, and the devastating incident was captured on camera.

Sánchez was standing before the congregation and continuing his message when the large cross came crashing down and struck him.
Worshippers immediately rushed to his aid and contacted emergency services. Sadly, Father Sánchez later died from his injuries.
Last Words
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil subsequently confirmed his death, explaining that Sánchez had served as the parish priest at Perpetuo Socorro Church. He was also a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.
However, it was the message he had shared just moments before the tragedy that remained in the minds of those who heard him.
He had been reflecting on how quickly life passes and reminding the congregation that death is something every person will eventually face.

“One day, all of us here will also die,” he said.
He encouraged those present to consider how they spend their valuable time—with God, their spouses, children, families, and the people around them.
“The quality time we give to God, to our brothers and sisters, to our husbands, wives, children, and family – that time is the best spent.”
Moments later, he asked God to bless everyone gathered at the service.
What Caused the Fall?
As of Monday, the reason the crucifix became detached from the wall remained unclear. Church officials had not publicly explained what caused it to fall.
For those who witnessed the tragedy, the timing of Sánchez’s words made the loss especially difficult to comprehend. However, members of the community also encouraged others not to interpret his death as punishment or claim to understand why the tragedy occurred.
One Catholic reflecting on the incident shared a different perspective: death should not become an excuse to judge others or search for someone to blame. Instead, it can be a time to pray, offer compassion, and place trust in God’s mercy.
Perhaps that is the most meaningful way to remember Father Sánchez.
Rather than trying to find an explanation for the tragedy, people can remember the message he was sharing when his life was suddenly cut short.
His words reminded the congregation of something easy to overlook: the time we spend with the people we love is precious.
For many who heard his final message, that reminder may remain with them for years to come.
May Father Patricio Sánchez rest in peace.
