The Only Survivor of Ten Kittens Was Too Fragile to Move—Now She Hops With Joy

Keke’s life began with heartbreak. Born into a litter of ten, the tiny tabby kitten arrived at a rescue in extremely fragile condition. Her bones were so delicate that even the slightest movement could cause a fracture. Sadly, despite the tireless efforts of experienced foster caregivers, all nine of her siblings passed away, leaving Keke as the only survivor.

Her foster mom, Casey from Tails High, refused to give up on her. However, Keke soon developed serious problems, including fractures and unusually brittle bones. After consulting specialists, her caregivers feared she might have osteogenesis imperfecta, a rare condition that causes bones to break easily.

Determined to find answers, the rescue team pursued additional testing. The results revealed a more hopeful explanation: Keke had a severe vitamin D deficiency, possibly associated with a formula her caregivers had used that was subsequently recalled.

With the cause identified, her recovery could finally begin.

For weeks, Keke stayed inside a padded incubator, surrounded by soft blankets to protect her fragile body. Even ordinary kitten movements were considered risky, so her caregivers carefully monitored her while providing appropriate nutrition and constant attention.

Gradually, things began to change. One day, Keke climbed out of her incubator independently, achieving a milestone that once seemed almost impossible.

Soon, she began making tiny attempts to move faster. Although her first movements were slow and wobbly, they brought enormous happiness to everyone who had supported her journey.

As her strength improved, Keke started eating wet food, using the litter box, and playing with toys. She also formed a special friendship with Clara Bow, a tortoiseshell cat who became her loving big-sister companion.

By ten weeks old, Keke had discovered her favorite mouse toy and developed a playful new way of moving. Her little sprints gradually turned into adorable bunny hops, delighting her foster family.

Although her front legs still show some abnormalities, Keke continues growing and developing. Her caregivers remain hopeful that she will make further progress with time.
