Jesse Adams, a Canadian animal rescuer who dedicated his life to helping vulnerable animals, has been killed in Ukraine while carrying out a rescue mission in one of the country’s most dangerous regions.
Adams was the founder of RainCoast Dog Rescue Society in Victoria, British Columbia. However, his compassion extended far beyond Canada. For more than three months, he had been working alongside Animal Rescue Kharkiv in Ukraine’s high-risk Donbas region, helping evacuate animals from communities caught in the middle of the war.
He and his team are estimated to have rescued as many as 1,000 animals, including dogs, cats, cows, goats, pigs, chinchillas, and turtles.
Their work involved entering communities threatened by Russian artillery, mortar fire, and drone attacks. Despite the constant danger, they continued returning to front-line areas to rescue animals that might otherwise have been abandoned.
Last Friday, Adams shared that he was preparing to head out on another rescue mission in eastern Ukraine.
Just two days later, tragedy struck.
A Russian first-person-view (FPV) drone hit the vehicle he was using to transport rescued animals in Kramatorsk. Adams suffered severe injuries and was rushed for emergency surgery. Despite the medical team’s efforts, his injuries proved fatal.

A Rescuer Who Never Turned Away From Danger
People who knew Adams remember him as someone who was always ready to help, regardless of how difficult or dangerous the situation became.
His humanitarian work had also taken him to Kabul, and he had undertaken several dangerous rescue missions in Ukraine. He helped animals of many different kinds while also supporting people and communities struggling through conflict.
Penny Stone, executive director of the Victoria Humane Society, described his extraordinary dedication in an interview with Global News.
“He was unbelievably go, go, go. Wherever help was needed, Jesse was,” she said.
Stone described his death as a devastating loss and remembered him as a real hero.

RainCoast Dog Rescue Society Pays Tribute to Its Founder
RainCoast Dog Rescue Society also shared an emotional tribute to its founder.
The organization remembered Adams as a man whose life was devoted to animal welfare and helping those who could not protect themselves.
It said that he had made the ultimate sacrifice for the beliefs he carried with him to the front lines of Ukraine.
His death has left a tremendous void in the animal rescue community, especially among the people and organizations who worked alongside him.

A Legacy Built on Compassion and Courage
Jesse Adams leaves behind a remarkable legacy of kindness, courage, and dedication.
The animals he rescued, the communities he supported, and the countless lives he helped protect will remain an important part of his story.
His work was never limited by borders or circumstances. Whether helping animals in Canada, Kabul, or war-torn Ukraine, he continued to answer the call whenever help was needed.
Jesse Adams believed that every animal and every person deserved a chance. Even in the middle of a devastating war, he continued showing up for those who had no way to ask for help themselves.
His courage gave thousands of vulnerable animals an opportunity to survive, and his compassion inspired others to continue the work he cared so deeply about.
Although his life ended during a rescue mission, the difference he made will not be forgotten. His legacy will live on through every animal he saved and every life he helped give a second chance.
