A small dog who was left tied up and abandoned beside a Florida road is miraculously alive after managing to crawl toward a nearby home in search of help.
With all four legs bound together, the helpless animal somehow managed to free one of his legs. Despite his injuries and limited ability to move, he dragged himself toward a nearby house in Ruskin, Florida.
The homeowner discovered the little dog on their porch and immediately offered him water before contacting Hillsborough County Animal Control.
A photograph taken by the homeowner showed the heartbreaking condition in which the dog had been found.
A Homeowner Finds the Bound Dog on Their Porch
The discovery left animal control officials deeply concerned about how anyone could abandon a healthy animal in such a cruel way.
Roger Mills, Division Director for Animal Control, spoke about the incident to WFLA News.
“Hard to believe that somebody would just throw a healthy dog, the dog is healthy, put it on the side of the road like that, and not give it a chance for survival,” Mills said.
He added that abandoning a dog was already against the law, but tying its legs together made the situation even more disturbing because it prevented the animal from escaping or finding help.
“It’s bad enough that you dump your dog, which is against the law, but you don’t want it to survive because you bound its legs together.”
A Surprisingly Gentle Dog Begins His Recovery
Despite everything he had endured, the two-year-old dog was found to be in relatively good health.
He did have heartworm and several scrapes from crawling toward the nearby home, but otherwise appeared to be doing well.
Even more surprising was his friendly personality.
Rather than reacting with fear or aggression, he allowed shelter staff to pick him up and handle him gently.
Lori Latzring of Hillsborough County Animal Services was amazed by how trusting he remained after such a frightening experience.
“He’s a very sweet dog. You know, to allow me to pick him up like this within 24 hours of what went on, that’s kind of surprising that he’s that trusting,” she said.
His gentle nature made his survival story even more touching. Despite being abandoned in such a cruel situation, he was still willing to trust the people who came to help him.
Authorities Launch an Investigation
Meanwhile, authorities have launched an investigation to identify the person responsible for abandoning and restraining the dog.
In Florida, animal abandonment under these circumstances can be prosecuted as a third-degree felony.
Officials also announced that a cash reward would be offered through Crime Stoppers to encourage anyone with information to come forward.
For now, the little dog will remain at the shelter while receiving the care and treatment he needs. Once he is healthy and ready, he will be available for adoption.
