Donald Trump has responded after Republicans were projected to lose control of the House of Representatives in the midterm elections. His reaction on Truth Social quickly attracted attention and spread across social media.
Donald Trump has finally addressed the projected Republican defeat in the 2026 midterm elections, which could hand control of the House of Representatives to Democrats. In his Truth Social post, the president made it clear that he did not consider the outcome a personal rejection.
“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” he wrote. “Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
It was the formal sign-off at the end of his message that particularly caught people’s attention. Social media users began sharing the post, with many making jokes about its unusually official-sounding conclusion.
A Very Different Tone Before the Vote
Trump’s response after the election sounded quite different from his message to supporters before voting began.
On the eve of Election Day, he appeared on Hannity and encouraged Republican voters to approach the midterms as though his own name were on the ballot.
“I’m just asking everybody to pretend that I’m on the ballot,” he said. “And in a way, I am.”
His earlier comments also became a subject of discussion among social media users.
“Well he said vote as if he was on the ballot so I did… now we get to work!!!” one Facebook commenter wrote.
Another person added: “This goes to show you that Democrats and the real Republicans and the independent can still see eye to eye.”
According to VT, Trump held 28 rallies across the country during October. He also posted 44 endorsements of Republican candidates on Truth Social within just 13 minutes and participated in six telephone rallies in a single evening.
Throughout the campaign, he encouraged supporters to turn out in large numbers, suggesting that strong participation would deliver a landslide victory.
This is not the first time Trump has emphasized that he was not personally running after Republicans suffered an electoral setback.
Following the party’s loss of the House in the 2018 midterm elections, he made a similar observation. After Democrats secured important victories in the 2025 off-year elections, he also shared a post citing pollsters who suggested that “TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT” was one factor behind the Republican losses.
What the Result Would Mean
According to Decision Desk HQ, Democrats were projected to win control of the House on election night. If the result holds, Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is expected to become Speaker of the House in January, potentially making history as the first Black American to hold the position.
A Democratic majority would give the party greater authority to oversee congressional investigations into the Trump administration. It would also provide Democrats with increased influence over federal spending and budget decisions.
Exit polls placed Trump’s approval rating at 38%. Nearly half of voters reportedly said they viewed the election as a rejection of the president.
The projected outcome also raises questions about one of Trump’s campaign promises.
Three weeks before Election Day, he said every adult American would receive $5,000 if Republicans managed to retain control of both chambers of Congress.
However, that promise was not mentioned in his Truth Social response to the projected House defeat.
