Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and sexual assault following a high-profile trial at Southwark Crown Court.
The 51-year-old comedian was convicted on November 5 of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault involving four women.
However, he was acquitted of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
Brand denied all seven charges throughout the trial, which examined allegations relating to incidents between 1999 and 2009.
Following the verdict, the judge confirmed that Brand would face a “significant custodial sentence” and ordered him to remain in custody ahead of sentencing.
The former television and radio personality is scheduled to return to court on Monday, November 9, when his punishment will be determined.
Russell Brand’s Trial and the Allegations Against Him
Brand stood trial over allegations made by six women concerning incidents that allegedly occurred over a period of more than a decade.
The charges included three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of attempted indecent assault.
Prosecutors argued that Brand used his celebrity status and charm to pursue women before allegedly engaging in sexual activity without their consent.
Lead prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC described him during the proceedings as a “ruthless, calculated and manipulative” predator.
The court heard evidence concerning alleged incidents at a hotel, a London residence, a Soho bar and various workplaces.
Brand’s defence team rejected the accusations, arguing that the encounters were consensual. They also suggested that the complainants’ memories had been influenced by media coverage in 2023.
Brand took the stand during the trial, denying the offences and maintaining that the sexual encounters in question had been consensual.
After considering the evidence, the jury found him guilty of four offences while clearing him of the remaining charges.
What Russell Brand Was Found Guilty Of
The jury returned verdicts covering four offences involving four of the six women who made complaints.
Brand was convicted of rape in connection with an allegation from 2009 involving a woman he had met at a comedy performance at Hammersmith Apollo.
He was also found guilty of three counts of sexual assault relating to separate incidents.
However, the jury found him not guilty of the other two rape charges and the attempted indecent assault allegation.
The attempted indecent assault charge related to an alleged incident in 2001, when Brand was accused of grabbing a female MTV employee by the arm and attempting to pull her towards a toilet.
The judge had previously reduced the original indecent assault charge to attempted indecent assault.
Brand pleaded not guilty to every charge and continued to deny the allegations throughout the proceedings.

Russell Brand’s Career Before the Trial
Brand became one of Britain’s best-known entertainers during the 2000s.
He initially attracted widespread attention through stand-up comedy and television appearances, including his role presenting Big Brother’s Big Mouth.
He later established himself as a prominent radio presenter before expanding into Hollywood, where he appeared in films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek.
His distinctive comedic style, outspoken personality and high-profile relationships helped establish him as a major celebrity.
In more recent years, Brand moved towards online broadcasting and political commentary, building a substantial audience through videos and livestreams.
He also spoke publicly about his Christian faith after being baptised in the River Thames in 2024.
Brand Has Been Found Guilty
According to Sky News, the courtroom fell silent as the jury foreman announced the verdicts, nine hours and 13 minutes after deliberations began.
Brand stood upright and remained still in the dock as the seven verdicts were read out.
In the friends and family section of the courtroom, his wife, Laura Brand, appeared to sink slightly into her seat. She leaned forward and held tightly onto the hand of the woman sitting beside her, who had been praying shortly before the verdicts were announced.
Following the announcement, Mr Justice Bennathan instructed Brand, saying: “Sit down Mr Brand.”
Addressing defence barrister Mr Winter and lead prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones, the judge discussed the next steps in the proceedings.
“Mr Winter, Ms Karmy-Jones, just on what happens next given the verdict on count six at least, obviously a custodial sentence of some length will result,” he said.
The judge described the case as “very well prepared” and confirmed that the sentencing hearing would take place on Monday.
He also informed Brand that the outcome of the verdicts would mean a “significant custodial term”.
Mr Justice Bennathan told him:
“You’ve been convicted of a number of offences including rape.
“The consequence of that is inevitably a significant custodial term.
“My current view is that I therefore have to remand you into custody.”
What Prison Sentence Could Russell Brand Face?
Brand now faces a prison sentence following his convictions.
Rape carries a maximum punishment of life imprisonment in England and Wales. However, the judge will decide the appropriate sentence by considering the circumstances of the offences and the relevant sentencing guidelines.
Penalties for sexual assault can range from a community order to a maximum of 10 years in prison.
According to Sentencing Council guidelines, judges must consider several factors when determining a sentence, including the offender’s level of culpability and the harm caused. This can include whether the offending resulted in severe psychological harm.
Following the verdict, the judge confirmed that Brand would receive a “significant custodial sentence” and ordered that he remain in custody until sentencing.
His sentencing hearing is scheduled for Monday, November 9.
The verdict represents a major development in a case that attracted international attention after allegations against Brand first became public in 2023.
Although he was acquitted of three charges, the four guilty verdicts mean he has been convicted of rape and sexual assault.
The court will now determine the length of the prison sentence he must serve.
Brand is due to be sentenced on Monday.
