An owner-abandoned dog was retrieved by a fireman and sent to a shelter. Last week, a building complex in Santa Monica caught fire. When they arrived, firefighters found a dog named Nalu unconscious and barely even breathing.
Firefighter Andrew Klein told KABC, “I found him in the midst of all the smoke and heat.”
The moment I reached out, I realized he was already gone, the speaker said.
Prior to putting the dog in an oxygen mask, Klein performed “mouth-to-snout” CPR on him. Around 20 minutes later, the dog started breathing on its own again. He became cognizant again and started to move. Eventually, neighbors picked him up and took him to an animal hospital nearby.
Nalu, a Bichon Frise/Shih Tzu mix, couldn’t be rescued when owner Crystal Lamirande returned home to find her apartment on fire. KABC reports that although Lamirande allegedly lost everything in the fire, she has forged a new bond with her neighborhood fire department.
“That was fairly great,” Klein told KTLA, “because I’ve been on a number of animal rescues that didn’t work out the same way that Nalu’s narrative did. I’ve been involved in several such animal rescues.
Having him back was without a doubt a success for the whole team and the department, the team said.
In ten minutes, firefighters extinguished the fire without inflicting any casualties.
