Brazilian Shelter Gives Homeless People and Abandoned Dogs a Second Chance

When people think of animal rescue, they often imagine shelters providing food, medical treatment, and safe homes for abandoned dogs and cats. However, one extraordinary shelter in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has taken a different approach by helping homeless people who dedicate their lives to caring for animals.

Founded in 2017 by journalist Glenn Greenwald and his late husband, David Miranda, Abrigo Hope, also known as HOPE Shelter, was created with a mission to help both homeless animals and the people who care for them. The founders recognized that many people living on the streets share their limited food and resources with stray dogs and cats, offering them love and protection despite their own difficult circumstances.

Rather than ignoring these special relationships, HOPE Shelter decided to turn compassion into opportunity. The organization began hiring homeless individuals who had demonstrated exceptional kindness toward abandoned animals. They received paid employment helping rescue, feed, protect, and care for dogs at the shelter.

However, the organization’s support extends far beyond providing jobs. With the help of social workers and psychologists, employees receive assistance in obtaining government identification, opening bank accounts, managing their earnings, and finding permanent housing. This support gives them an opportunity to rebuild their lives and achieve greater independence.
One of the shelter’s first employees was Lucas, a 20-year-old who had been living on the streets. After joining the organization, he was able to save money from his earnings and secure a place to live. His experience demonstrated how meaningful employment can create new opportunities for people facing homelessness.

While the employees work toward rebuilding their lives, rescued dogs receive food, veterinary treatment, shelter, and opportunities to find loving forever homes. The shelter has created a supportive environment where both people and animals can begin again.
Funded entirely by public donations, HOPE Shelter has already helped thousands of dogs find adoptive families and cares for nearly 200 animals at a time. It also provides food and medication assistance to low-income pet owners throughout Rio de Janeiro, helping families keep their beloved companions.
In 2024, the organization secured additional land for a larger shelter designed to double its capacity. The new facility was scheduled to open in the summer of 2026.

HOPE Shelter’s inspiring mission shows how helping people can also transform the lives of animals, creating a future built on compassion, dignity, and second chances.
