When Monty arrived at the Kathleen C. Cailloux Humane Society in Texas back in 2014, he was only a young puppy.
He came to the shelter with his brother, Phoenix. Even though they were suddenly living in a kennel, the two puppies quickly became favorites among the staff. They loved splashing around in small pools, chasing one another through the grass, rolling in the dirt, and then jumping straight back into the water.

Before long, Monty was adopted and finally had a family of his own.
But his happiness did not last forever.
Just two years later, Monty was returned to the shelter. By that time, Phoenix had already been adopted by another family, leaving Monty to begin his search all over again.
The years slowly passed.
The energetic puppy grew into a senior dog, spending much of his life behind shelter kennel doors. His once-dark coat gradually developed gray hairs, quietly showing how much time had gone by while he waited for someone to choose him.
Monty was shy when meeting new people and could become nervous around other animals. Still, shelter workers knew what a gentle and loving dog he truly was.
Over the years, they became familiar with his personality and favorite things. Monty loved wearing sweaters and pajamas, enjoyed his daily walks, and still had a playful spark that reminded everyone of the puppy he had once been.
Then, after spending most of his life waiting, something finally changed.

Monty’s story began receiving attention online, and the shelter eventually shared the news everyone had been hoping to hear.
Monty had finally found a home.
He was placed with a loving foster-to-adopt family, giving the longtime shelter resident a chance to experience something he had been missing for most of his life — a quiet home, comfortable surroundings and people who wanted him there.
The shelter later shared a photo of Monty looking peaceful and happy in his new surroundings. They explained that they hoped everyone could see just how content he was and that he could finally enjoy the wonderful life he deserved.
The shelter staff also continued checking in on him. Monty still remembered the people who had cared for him throughout his many years at the shelter, making his happy ending even more meaningful for those who had never given up on him.
The staff were simply grateful that their special old friend had finally found the right family.
After more than ten years of waiting, Monty’s kennel door finally opened for good.

The puppy who once spent his days playing in the water had grown into a senior dog, but his story proved that it is never too late for a shelter dog to find love.
Monty finally got the happy ending he had been waiting for — and after all those years, he was finally home.
