A pit bull mix is recovering after being left trapped inside a wire crate in the back of a pickup truck for more than 10 hours outside a motel in Cobb County, Georgia. The dog endured extreme heat, with temperatures reaching the 90s. Officers discovered that the plastic floor of his crate had become dangerously hot, measuring 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius). The poor dog suffered painful burns on his paws and struggled to stand when rescuers finally found him.

Authorities subsequently located the dog’s owners, Ebony Newell and Reginald Weems, asleep inside the nearby motel. Both individuals were arrested and charged with animal cruelty. Weems also faces additional charges involving drugs and firearms.
Following his rescue, the injured pit bull mix was transported to Cobb County Animal Services. Veterinary professionals examined him and began treating his burned paws and other injuries. Although the experience was extremely distressing, the dog is now receiving the care he needs to begin recovering.
Animal Services officials have expressed growing concern about the number of animals being left in dangerously hot conditions. They reported responding to approximately a dozen incidents involving dogs left in hot vehicles during the summer. Officials have also noticed an increase in cases involving pets abandoned outside motels because their owners cannot bring them indoors.
The incident highlights the serious dangers that extreme temperatures pose to animals. Even when outdoor temperatures seem manageable, vehicles, truck beds, and enclosed crates can heat up rapidly, creating life-threatening conditions for pets.
