A family was overjoyed when their missing dog was finally found more than a year after she disappeared from their yard. Nina, a Pit Bull, was discovered during a raid on an alleged cockfighting operation in Marlboro County, South Carolina.
On March 29, 2015, Carolina Waterfowl Rescue joined other groups in helping rescue approximately 120 roosters during the operation, which resulted in 27 arrests. Among the birds, rescuers discovered a severely underweight Pit Bull chained outside. Beside her, 10 newborn puppies were kept in a makeshift kennel.

While watching television coverage of the rescue, April Morris and her family recognized the dog immediately.
It was Nina, their beloved pet who had disappeared from their yard in December 2013.

The night Nina went missing had started like any other. Her family let her outside for a brief bathroom break before going inside to make a cup of tea.
When they returned just minutes later to bring her back indoors, Nina was nowhere to be found.

Her family searched desperately for her. They put up missing-dog posters, shared information on Facebook and asked friends and relatives to help. More than a year passed without any sign of their beloved companion.
Then, unexpectedly, they saw her on the news.

During the rescue, Amie, a volunteer with Carolina Waterfowl Rescue, approached Nina and gently hugged her. The touching moment was captured on camera.
The rescue organization later explained that Nina appeared to have gone without proper food for some time, judging by her extremely thin condition. The volunteer’s gentle embrace offered a moment of kindness to a dog who had clearly endured a difficult experience.

The Marlboro County Humane Society took Nina into its care, and before long, she was reunited with her family.
Nina and her 10 puppies were finally safe at home. Although the mother dog was still weak and needed veterinary attention, her family was overwhelmed with happiness that she had survived.
April described the reunion as almost unbelievable. After spending so long wondering what had happened to Nina, seeing her return home felt like a miracle.
A Family’s Promise to Protect Nina
After Nina returned, April shared the family’s plans to help her recover and protect her future.
Nina had never previously lived chained outside. According to April, she had been raised inside the family home and treated like a child. When she disappeared at around a year and a half old, her family had been unsure whether they wanted her to have puppies at all.
Nina had worn a collar and identification tag, and the family had continued searching for her throughout her disappearance.
Now that she was home, they planned to have her microchipped and provide her with full veterinary care. Nina would also be spayed to prevent future pregnancies.
Her puppies would be placed through an adoption organization with strict requirements intended to ensure they went to responsible families and received proper care.
April expressed deep gratitude to the rescue workers, volunteers, friends and relatives who helped bring Nina home. She also thanked the people who had cared for her during the rescue process.
One of the most comforting things was how naturally Nina settled back into family life. She returned to sleeping at the foot of her owners’ bed, with her puppies beside her.
From then on, her family intended to stay close whenever she went outdoors.
The experience had taught them how quickly a seemingly ordinary moment could turn into a long and painful separation.

The family planned to care for Nina’s puppies until they were ready for adoption. The Marlboro County Humane Society also reported that homes had already been found for the little ones.
Nina’s story began with a sudden disappearance and more than a year of uncertainty. It ended with a reunion that brought her back to the people who had never stopped looking for her.
Her recovery would take time, but she was finally surrounded by familiar faces, affection and safety.
Thanks to the rescue teams and everyone who helped, Nina and her puppies had a chance to begin a new chapter together.
