Neglected Husky Curled Up in a Corner, Waiting for Someone to Finally Rescue Him

A tiny, unwell Husky sat curled up against a wall at an overcrowded animal refuge in Harbin, China. She was among nearly 2,000 dogs brought to the property after being saved from trucks reportedly transporting animals to dog meat slaughterhouses.

Although these dogs had escaped a terrible fate, the refuge struggled to provide individual care for so many animals. The woman who owned the property regularly allowed rescuers from Harbin Slaughterhouse Survivors Animal Rescue (Harbin SHS) to take away the dogs who urgently needed medical attention.

One of those dogs was a fragile Husky who would later be named Harriet.

Harriet was hiding in a corner, looking painfully thin and weak. Her coat was heavily matted, and patches of fur were falling out. She was so small and underweight that the rescuers initially wondered whether she was still a puppy.

Her condition showed how badly she needed help.

Hayley Hayes-Fitzgerald, Aimee Clarke and Emily Parker were three expatriates living in Harbin. During the day, they worked as teachers, but outside their jobs, they dedicated their free time to rescuing animals.

The trio began working together in the summer of 2016 after witnessing the enormous number of animals needing help in Harbin and throughout China.

In just a few years, their efforts had helped save more than 600 dogs.

When the rescuers took Harriet away from the refuge, they brought her to a veterinary clinic for an examination.

They were surprised to learn that she was probably around eight months old. Her unusually small size was believed to be the result of prolonged malnutrition.

The team began helping her recover by giving her a bath, carefully shaving away her tangled fur and surrounding her with gentle affection.

For the first time in a long while, Harriet could begin experiencing the comfort she deserved.

Fortunately, apart from the effects of inadequate nutrition and her poor coat condition, Harriet was otherwise reported to be healthy.

Despite everything she had endured, she remained remarkably gentle.

Rescuer Hinman later recalled how quietly Harriet behaved while her matted fur was being removed. The process took considerable time, but the little dog sat patiently without barking or growling.

Her calm nature deeply touched the people caring for her. Even after such a difficult beginning, Harriet showed the sweetness and kindness that many rescued dogs reveal once they begin to feel safe.

As Harriet gradually regained her strength, a woman living thousands of miles away came across her photograph online.

Rosee Vallee, who lived in Canada, immediately felt a connection with the recovering Husky and decided she wanted to adopt her.

Arrangements were made for Harriet to travel to North America with the help of a Harbin SHS volunteer. Rosee eventually met her in San Francisco, beginning a new chapter in the dog’s life.

A New Life Filled With Love

After arriving at her new home, Harriet quickly became a treasured member of Rosee’s family.

Rosee affectionately called her “princess” and made sure she experienced all the wonderful things she had previously missed out on.

Harriet began enjoying road trips, canoe rides on Lake Louise and meeting new people wherever she went.

She also found companionship with her three canine siblings. One of them had even been rescued by Harbin SHS, making their connection to the rescue organization especially meaningful.

Looking back at Harriet’s transformation, Hinman expressed how happy it made her to see the once-fragile dog thriving in her new life.

She reflected on all the people who had come together to help Harriet, recognizing their collective efforts as the real heroes behind the rescue.

Harriet’s journey demonstrates what can happen when people choose compassion instead of looking away.

She went from a frightened, undernourished dog hiding in an overcrowded refuge to a beloved family member exploring the world with confidence.

Her past cannot be erased, but her future is now filled with affection, comfort and adventures.

Harriet’s story is a beautiful reminder that every dog deserves the opportunity to feel safe, loved and valued. Sometimes, a second chance can change an entire life.
