Dog Who Took Shelter in an Oven During Greece’s Devastating Wildfires Finally Gets Adopted

In 2018, a small dog named Loukoumakis survived one of Greece’s deadliest wildfires by hiding inside an outdoor brick oven. As terrifying flames swept through the coastal town of Mati, destroying homes and claiming numerous lives, the frightened dog found an unlikely hiding place that ultimately saved him.

Animal rescue volunteer Artemis Kyriakopoulou discovered the white poodle mix while searching the devastated village for animals that had survived the disaster. His fur was stained yellow, his body was covered in soot, and he appeared exhausted and terrified. When Artemis spotted him inside the brick oven, she gently offered him food and water, trying to convince him to come out of his hiding place.

The discovery happened just two days after the catastrophic wildfire killed around 90 people. The destruction was overwhelming, and rescuers were struggling to comprehend the tragedy while searching for surviving animals. Finding Loukoumakis gave them a small but meaningful reason to keep going.
After being rescued, Loukoumakis was taken to a nearby animal shelter, where volunteers began caring for him. However, his recovery was not easy. Diana Topali, another rescue volunteer, explained that the dog initially reacted aggressively because he was extremely frightened. He growled, attempted to bite, and struggled to trust the people trying to help him.

Rather than giving up, the volunteers patiently worked to earn his confidence. They discovered which treats he enjoyed and used food to build a bond with him. Gradually, Loukoumakis began accepting their kindness and feeling safer around people.

As his rescuers examined his condition, they realized his suffering had probably started long before the wildfire. Elena Dede, founder of Dogs’ Voice, explained that his severely neglected coat and poor health suggested he had endured prolonged abuse. Three layers of dead fur covered his body,
indicating that his condition could not have developed during the short period since the fire.

Believed to be around four years old, Loukoumakis received antibiotics and the medical attention he needed. Thankfully, he was expected to make a full recovery.

His story eventually reached a beautiful conclusion when an experienced animal rescuer adopted him, offering him a loving forever home where he could finally feel secure.

Meanwhile, Artemis remained determined to help other animals affected by the disaster. She planned to return to Mati to continue searching for survivors.

Loukoumakis’s remarkable survival became a touching reminder that even after devastating tragedies, compassion and patience can give vulnerable animals another chance at happiness.
