Matthew McConaughey revealed that he was sexually assaulted by a man while unconscious in the back of a van when he was a teenager.
He also shared that he was pressured and blackmailed into having sex for the first time at just 15 years old.
Despite these deeply painful experiences, the Oscar-winning actor says he has never viewed himself as a victim and has continued to move forward with a positive outlook on life.
McConaughey discussed these experiences in his memoir, Greenlights, where he also admitted that he once feared he would go to hell for having sex before marriage.
“I was blackmailed into having sex for the first time when I was 15. I was certain I was going to hell for the premarital sex,” the 50-year-old wrote.
“Today, I am merely certain that I hope that’s not the case.”
The actor, who has three children, also revealed another disturbing experience from his teenage years.
“I was molested by a man when I was 18 while knocked unconscious in the back of a van.”
Despite what happened to him, the Dallas Buyers Club star has maintained an optimistic outlook.
“I’ve never felt like a victim,” he said. “I have a lot of proof that the world is conspiring to make me happy.”
McConaughey’s career has continued to grow since he first became widely recognized for his performance in Dazed and Confused (1992). He later won an Academy Award for portraying Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club.
His performances in films such as Interstellar and television series like True Detective further established him as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars.
Beyond acting, McConaughey has also shown support for efforts to prevent sexual assault. In 2016, he helped the University of Texas promote its “Rape Elimination Program” by driving students home from campus after dark.
He was photographed giving students rides as part of an effort to raise awareness about sexual assault prevention.
“Longhorns take care of each other, and it’s ‘safe’ to say Matthew McConaughey agrees,” the accompanying caption read.
“Don’t forget to use SURE Walk when traveling home late at night; you never know who might pick you up!”
His memoir also shares personal details about his family, including the turbulent relationship between his parents.
McConaughey described how his mother, Kay, once broke his father’s nose and held a knife toward him during an argument. He also recalled that the couple later had sex on the kitchen floor. According to the account, his parents married three times and divorced twice.
By sharing experiences he kept private for years, McConaughey has opened up a difficult conversation about sexual abuse and the importance of speaking out.
His story also highlights that survivors can have complicated experiences and different ways of understanding what happened to them. No one should have to feel ashamed or remain silent because of abuse.
Sexual assault and exploitation are serious issues, and those affected deserve to be heard, supported and treated with compassion.
Sharing stories like McConaughey’s may help others feel less alone and encourage survivors to seek support when they are ready.
