President Donald Trump is accusing Democratic leaders of sending “threatening” letters and messages to Republicans, claiming that he has directed the Department of Justice to investigate what he described as a possible “criminal act.”
However, Trump did not provide evidence to support the allegation or identify the specific letters and messages he was referring to.
“Threatening letters have been sent to many people, all innocent, from Democrat Political Leaders. By copy of this statement, I am ordering the Department of Justice to look into this criminal act, immediately!” he wrote on his social media platform.
The president did not explain what the alleged letters contained or why he believed they could constitute a criminal offence.
His accusation appeared in a lengthy social media post criticizing Democrats for discussing possible impeachment efforts against members of his Cabinet. Trump accused them of attempting to use impeachment threats as a form of “extortion” while insisting that his administration had committed no wrongdoing.

“The Democrats are going around threatening a lot of people, including the Attorney General of the United States, and others, with Impeachment and many other forms of punishment, even though they admit they have no reason to do so, and there have been no impeachable acts committed, or even thought of, by the victims of this illegal process. This is extortion at the highest level, and they should be held accountable for this,” Trump said.
The comments come after Democrats reclaimed both chambers of Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections, raising expectations of increased congressional oversight of the Trump administration.
Republican Representative Thomas Massie is expected to introduce a privileged resolution seeking to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth again. The move could take place as early as Monday.
Trump also alleged, without presenting evidence, that Democrats were targeting Republican donors with threats simply because of their political affiliation.
The president described the alleged actions as another example of what he called “weaponization,” adding to his criticism of Democratic efforts to investigate and challenge members of his administration.
At this stage, Trump has not publicly identified the alleged threatening communications or provided details supporting his claims.
