One ordinary afternoon in southern Spain, Mateo was heading home when a faint, desperate meow stopped him in his tracks. Following the sound, he discovered a tiny kitten trapped inside the engine compartment of a parked bus near an auto shop.
The frightened tabby wouldn’t come out, terrified by the noise and the unfamiliar surroundings. Mateo rushed to get some cat food, hoping to coax the kitten out of hiding, but the little one was too scared to move.
He left the food nearby and returned later, only to find the meal partially eaten—but adult cats had also shown up, harassing the kitten.
Determined to help, Mateo stayed for hours with his gloves and more food, patiently waiting for the kitten to trust him. After three long hours, his efforts paid off.
He carefully scooped up the trembling kitten and noticed right away how rough life had been on him—his eyes were badly infected, and his body bore scars and wounds from past fights.
On the way home, the kitten shook with fear, meowing nonstop. But once Mateo settled him into a quiet bathroom with food, water, and a soft towel, the kitten slowly started to calm down. Mateo stayed close, giving him space yet letting him know he wasn’t alone.
The kitten, now named Cal (after a Star Wars character), began to open up. Mateo sat nearby, waiting patiently until Cal was brave enough to approach.
The moment Cal curled up and fell asleep next to him, Mateo knew the little stray had finally realized he was safe.
With care, patience, and love, Cal’s health improved. His eyes healed, the fleas were gone, and his confidence grew. What started as a simple rescue became something much deeper—an unbreakable bond.
Each day, Mateo found himself more attached to the ginger tabby who had survived so much. Cal went from a frightened kitten hiding in a bus to a beloved companion—proof that sometimes, the smallest rescues have the biggest impact.
