ChipPurr Jones’ name was inspired by Chipper Jones, one of the most iconic players in Atlanta Braves history. The Baseball Hall of Famer was chosen first overall in the 1990 MLB Draft and went on to earn eight All-Star selections, an MVP award, and a World Series championship during his celebrated career with Atlanta.
When the Braves’ Triple-A affiliate in Gwinnett welcomed a rescued cat to the team in late August, they invited fans to help choose his name. Supporters quickly embraced the idea, sending in plenty of creative suggestions. One name, however, immediately caught everyone’s attention: ChipPurr Jones.
The clever name was a perfect combination of baseball tradition and the adorable personality of the team’s newest feline. Before long, ChipPurr was gaining attention of his own and becoming a familiar little celebrity among fans.
A Rescue Cat Takes the Field
After joining the team, ChipPurr quickly won over fans with his curious nature and irresistibly cute appearance. As his popularity continued to grow, the rescue cat became the perfect choice for a special appearance during a pet-supply donation event at Gwinnett Field on Tuesday night.
Rather than inviting a typical celebrity or guest to handle the ceremonial first pitch, the team decided to give ChipPurr his own moment in the spotlight.
