A little over six months ago, a Golden Retriever was still living at a dog meat farm in South Korea, with no idea that her life was about to change. At the same time, thousands of miles away, a young woman was hoping to welcome a dog into her life.
Then her sister, who followed Humane Society International (HSI), contacted her with news that the organization was shutting down a dog meat farm. She began looking through photos of the rescued dogs, but one particular image stopped her in her tracks.
It showed a lonely Golden Retriever chained up by herself.
“The sad expression, the heavy chain choking her neck, the tail between the legs that was wagging gently because someone had come to free her,” daisyintheair wrote on Reddit.
The thought that this beautiful dog was waiting to be slaughtered was devastating to her.
“‘This is my dog. This is the one.’ That’s all I could think to myself.”
From that moment, the Golden Retriever’s journey toward a completely different life began.
The dog was rescued from the farm and prepared for the long journey to the United States.
She was carefully placed inside a travel crate before beginning her trip to a new country and an entirely unfamiliar future.
After arriving in the United States, Harper spent her first few days at an animal shelter while waiting for the next stage of her journey.
Her future mom eventually discovered which shelter was caring for Harper. By then, the shelter had already received numerous calls and emails from people interested in adopting her.
However, Harper first needed to be spayed before she could officially be placed for adoption.
She was believed to be around one year old, and once her adoption listing went live, she would be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
“I filled out the preliminary paperwork and checked the website obsessively for a week. Finally, on that Friday, her photo came up. We were the first to show up at the shelter.”
The shelter staff warned her that Harper was extremely frightened and nervous around people.
Her coat was rough and lacked the soft, fluffy appearance normally associated with a healthy Golden Retriever. Even after receiving a bath, she still carried an unpleasant smell from the poor conditions she had endured.
But none of that mattered to her future mom.
“I didn’t care about any of these perceived flaws though, I knew this was my dog.”
On Harper’s first day at home, she immediately seemed comfortable with her crate. She spent much of her time there while recovering from her spay surgery.
Her new mom soon discovered that Harper had an enormous list of fears.
Loud sounds frightened her. So did the outdoors, unfamiliar people, cars, water, rain, puddles, showers, baths, vacuum cleaners, and even Swiffers.
Everything outside her safe space seemed unfamiliar.
Harper eventually posed for her first family photograph, showing off an adorable smile while focusing completely on the treat being held just outside the camera.
It was a small moment, but it showed that the frightened dog from the meat farm was slowly beginning to experience happiness.
Rain was still one of Harper’s biggest challenges, so her family found a creative solution by giving her some protective rain gear.
It helped her deal with the weather while she continued learning that not everything outside was something to fear.
Her new outfit even gave her a funny resemblance to the famous Gorton’s fisherman.
Harper’s first meeting with other dogs was understandably overwhelming.
She initially crouched down when several dogs approached her at once. But after a few minutes, her nervousness began to disappear.
Soon, she was comfortably sniffing her new friends and even joining them in play.
Looking back, her mom felt that introducing Harper to one or two dogs at a time might have been easier for her, but thankfully, the experience ended positively.
Then came Harper’s first snowfall.
Despite being frightened of rain and water, she discovered that snow was completely different.
She loved it.
Harper happily jumped into snowbanks and explored the fresh snow with excitement, revealing another side of her personality.
Harper also had her first experiences with dog walkers.
Because her mom works full time, Harper has dog walkers who spend time with her during the day.
Thankfully, Harper quickly grew comfortable with them and began enjoying their company.
Like many curious young dogs, Harper discovered the joy of chewing sticks.
She happily enjoyed her little outdoor adventures, finding new things to investigate and turning ordinary moments into fun.
Of course, Harper eventually committed another classic puppy crime: chewing on a shoe.
It was her first shoe-chewing offense, another sign that she was becoming comfortable enough to behave like an ordinary, playful dog.
Harper also successfully completed her intermediate training class and was ready to continue her education in an advanced class.
The once-terrified dog was now learning new skills and becoming more confident every day.
Harper’s first visit to the beach was another major milestone.
A dog who had once been frightened by the outdoors was now discovering new places, new smells, and new experiences with the person she trusted most.
Harper even had her first day at the office.
Rather than causing trouble or becoming nervous, she apparently decided that the best way to spend her workday was by sleeping on the job.
After six months, Harper’s transformation was remarkable.
She no longer feared people, loud noises, the outdoors, or riding in a car. In fact, she now happily jumps into the car because she knows it might lead to a trip to PetSmart or a visit to the park.
She loves meeting new people and will happily try to give kisses to anyone who passes by.
Water is still something she is working to overcome, but her family is confident that she will continue making progress.
Her coat has also become soft and silky after receiving proper nutrition and regular grooming.
“Harper has been an indescribable joy in my life,” her mom shared. “She is a spunky little thing that has so much personality and love – it’s hard to imagine that she was ever destined to end up on a dinner plate. I love waking up in the morning to her licking my hand.”
Harper’s journey has been extraordinary.
She went from being a frightened dog chained inside a South Korean dog meat farm to becoming a playful, affectionate companion surrounded by people who love her.
Her transformation wasn’t only about moving from one country to another. She learned to trust people, enjoy the outdoors, make friends, explore new places, and experience the simple joys that every dog deserves.
Most importantly, Harper finally discovered what it feels like to be safe and loved.
The dog who once had almost no future now wakes up every morning in a loving home, ready to enjoy another day of her new life.
