But for one playful pup in Florida, the biggest concern was making sure she didn’t lose her beloved giant stick. The unusual incident took place in Florida’s Weeki Wachee River, where the energetic dog was enjoying a game of fetch with her owner. When she spotted an enormous tree branch in the water, she eagerly jumped in and grabbed it. However, her playful adventure soon turned dangerous when she accidentally became tangled in a rope and couldn’t free herself.
Fortunately, Hernando County Marine Deputy L. Shafer was patrolling the river on his jet ski when he noticed the dog struggling in the water. Realizing she was in danger, he immediately rushed to help. After the dog’s owner called for assistance, the deputy carefully approached the frightened pup and used a knife to cut through the rope.
Once she was free, he gently helped her onto his jet ski and began bringing her safely back to shore. However, there was something that made this rescue particularly amusing. Despite everything she had just experienced, the determined dog refused to let go of her enormous tree branch. She held on to her precious prize throughout the entire rescue, seemingly unwilling to leave it behind.

When they finally reached the shore, the dog’s owner asked the deputy to throw the branch back into the water. The moment it landed, the enthusiastic pup immediately jumped off the jet ski and went after it again. Fortunately, she managed to retrieve her favorite stick and return safely to shore.
With the oversized branch firmly clamped between her jaws, she happily walked alongside her owner, seemingly proud of her successful adventure. What could have ended in tragedy instead became a delightful moment that brought smiles to everyone involved.
Deputy Shafer couldn’t help laughing at the dog’s determination. Reflecting on the unusual experience, he said, “That made my day, right there.”
