Her difficult journey began when she was discovered living in a kennel in a parking lot. Homeless and severely underweight, Gertrude was also suffering from mange, a painful skin condition that required immediate medical attention. Fortunately, rescuers from NOCO Humane in Colorado came to her aid and gave her the opportunity to start a new life.
When Gertrude first arrived at the shelter, her condition was concerning. She needed proper nutrition, medical treatment, and plenty of affection. Despite everything she had endured, she remained remarkably playful and friendly. With consistent care and attention, she gradually regained her strength and began looking healthier.
After several weeks of recovery, Gertrude seemed ready to take the next step toward finding a forever family. Unfortunately, just as her future began to look brighter, another unexpected health problem emerged. She started sneezing frequently and developed severe nasal discharge. Veterinarians diagnosed her with a respiratory infection, forcing the shelter team to isolate her for more than a week.

Thankfully, Gertrude responded to treatment and eventually recovered. However, another unexpected challenge was waiting for her. Wildfires swept through Larimer County, creating an emergency for local animal shelters. NOCO Humane had to accommodate more than 200 pets evacuated from dangerous areas, leaving its staff struggling with limited space.
To ensure every animal received proper care, other rescue organizations stepped forward. Gertrude was transferred to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region in Colorado Springs, where she received another opportunity to find a family.
Her cheerful personality quickly captured the hearts of the shelter staff. Despite her difficult past, Gertrude continued to charm everyone with her playful behavior and infectious happiness.
When she was finally listed for adoption, her wait was surprisingly short. A loving family chose her that very same day, giving her the safe and happy future she deserved.
