Mariska Hargitay had already made Emmy history before she even stepped onto the stage. But when the Law & Order: SVU star arrived at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, it was her stunning red-carpet appearance that immediately caught everyone’s attention.
Hargitay hosted the September 14 ceremony at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, becoming the first woman in 15 years to host the Emmys, following Jane Lynch’s 2011 hosting role.
For the occasion, Hargitay wore a breathtaking fire-red Monse gown covered in shimmering sequins. The dramatic dress featured a sweetheart neckline, a one-shoulder design and a feathered asymmetrical hem that extended into a flowing train. She completed the look with red heels, simple jewelry and glamorous makeup.
Fans quickly praised her appearance, with one viewer calling it her “best look ever.”
A Meaningful Tribute
The gown also carried a deeply personal meaning. Hargitay’s red-carpet look was inspired by the red dress her late mother, legendary actress Jayne Mansfield, wore in the 1956 film The Girl Can’t Help It.
Hargitay’s family joined her for the special evening. Her 15-year-old daughter, Amaya, wore a shorter sparkling red dress, creating a memorable mother-daughter moment. Hargitay’s husband, actor Peter Hermann, and their sons August and Andrew also attended, dressed in classic tuxedos.
The family’s appearance quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the night. While many fans loved the coordinated outfits, some online commenters questioned whether Amaya’s dress was appropriate for her age.
Others focused instead on the family resemblance, with several fans pointing out how strongly the children resemble their famous parents.
A Special Emmy Night
The evening was particularly meaningful for Hargitay because she was also nominated at the ceremony.
She previously revealed that she initially thought the hosting offer was a joke when NBCUniversal Television Studios chairman Pearlena Igbokwe called her backstage during her play Every Brilliant Thing.
Hargitay later described the opportunity to host while also receiving a nomination as “more extraordinary than I have the words to express.”
With her historic hosting role, emotional family appearance and unforgettable red gown, Hargitay certainly gave fans plenty to remember from this year’s Emmys.
