Michael had been blind since birth, and Roselle, a loyal Labrador Retriever, was trained to help him navigate safely through everyday life. On that tragic morning, Michael was working on the 78th floor of the North Tower when the terrorist attacks began.
As confusion and panic spread throughout the building, Michael knew he needed to evacuate. He trusted Roselle completely, and she calmly began leading him toward the emergency stairs. Together, they started the long journey down the tower.
Michael and Roselle descended approximately 1,463 steps. The stairwell was crowded with frightened people, but Michael remained focused. He repeatedly praised Roselle and encouraged her as they continued downward. His calm behavior also helped reassure several people who were following them.
After roughly 30 minutes, Michael, Roselle, a colleague, and five other people finally reached the lobby. Their escape, however, was not yet over. An NYPD officer warned them to move away from the building and take cover because the tower could collapse.

Roselle once again took charge. She guided Michael through the dust and confusion filling the streets of Lower Manhattan. Despite the frightening conditions, she continued leading him away from danger. Eventually, she guided him toward a subway station, helping him reach a safer location.
Michael later expressed his deep gratitude for Roselle, crediting her with helping him remain calm and focused during the disaster. Her steady behavior also gave confidence to other people who were trying to escape.
Roselle lived for 14 years and passed away in the summer of 2011. Although she was no longer there to guide Michael, her remarkable actions on September 11 remained an unforgettable part of their story.
