A tiny orange kitten spent a terrifying night trapped beneath heavy rocks inside a drainpipe, crying out into the darkness. Today, he is safe, full of affection, and rarely far from his favorite stuffed toy.

A Little Kitten in Need of Help
Rocky is thriving today because two people refused to stop searching for him. Barely a month old, the little ginger kitten had already survived an ordeal that would have been frightening for any animal.
His rescuers believe someone may have left him near a highway close to the Hixson YMCA in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The area was situated at the top of a hill, where a large drainage pipe began.
Searching for shelter, the tiny kitten slipped beneath a concrete wall and disappeared inside the drain.
Late one Friday night, Holly, a volunteer with SCRATCH, Inc., a cat rescue organization in Chattanooga, learned that a kitten was crying somewhere nearby.
She and her husband immediately set out to find him.

Following the Cries Into the Darkness
The couple began searching near the freeway, where the kitten’s cries seemed loudest.
Because the location was dangerously close to traffic, they first secured the upper opening to prevent the kitten from wandering onto the road. Then they moved to the other end of the pipe to continue their search.
Darkness made everything more difficult. The frightened cries echoed through the drainage system, making it hard to determine exactly where the kitten was hiding.
To help locate him, the rescuers played kitten sounds on a phone, hoping he would respond.
What they discovered was heartbreaking.
The tiny animal had become trapped beneath a pile of large rocks, possibly displaced by a rockslide while the couple was searching from the freeway side.

A Tiny Tail Led Them to Rocky
Holly’s husband continued sweeping his flashlight across the dark pipe until he noticed the tip of a tiny tail.
They had finally found him.
Working carefully, he began removing the heavy rocks one by one. Every movement had to be controlled so the kitten could be reached safely.
After what must have felt like an eternity, they finally uncovered the little orange cat.
Thankfully, he appeared to have escaped without serious physical injuries.
They named him Rocky, inspired by the rocks that had trapped him and the remarkable little survivor he had proved to be.

His First Response Was a Purr
As soon as Holly brought Rocky close, the frightened kitten began purring.
Instead of struggling to escape, he settled into the arms of the people who had worked so hard to reach him.
Holly later recalled that he started purring almost immediately after she picked him up. To her, it seemed as though he was relieved to finally be safe.
Once they returned home, she gave him a gentle flea bath and offered him a warm meal to fill his hungry little belly.
But Holly wasn’t ready to assume the rescue was complete.
Over the following days, she returned to the drainpipe several times to check whether other kittens might have been left behind.
Each search brought the same result: Rocky appeared to have been the only kitten in need of help that night.

Growing Stronger in Foster Care
Rocky soon settled into foster care with Holly, who became both his rescuer and his foster mother.
With regular meals, warmth, and attention, he began gaining strength. In just two weeks, his weight doubled from approximately one pound to two pounds.
As his health improved, his lively personality began to emerge.
He was no longer simply the frightened kitten crying beneath the rocks. He became an energetic little companion who wanted to explore everything happening around him.
With food readily available and a comfortable place to rest, Rocky finally had the chance to behave like the playful young kitten he was.

A Big Appetite and an Even Bigger Personality
Food quickly became one of Rocky’s greatest passions.
He also loved chasing feathers on a wand toy, turning ordinary playtime into one of the highlights of his day.
Holly described him as exceptionally affectionate, with an enormous appetite and an endless enthusiasm for feather toys.
Yet one of his most treasured possessions wasn’t a toy designed for chasing.
It was a heartbeat stuffed cat.
The soft toy produces a gentle pulsing sensation that can provide comfort to young animals missing the warmth and reassurance of their mother.
Rocky quickly became attached to it. He curled up beside the stuffed companion in his bed, snuggling against it as he settled down to rest.
After spending a night alone in a dark drainpipe, he now had something soft and comforting to hold close.

The Clever Kitten Who Learned to High-Five
Rocky’s personality wasn’t limited to cuddles and playtime.
He also showed an impressive ability to learn. Before long, he had learned to offer a high-five on command.
Holly was delighted by how quickly he picked up the trick, describing him as a smart kitten who was already thoroughly spoiled.
His days were now filled with affection, play, good food, and opportunities to learn.
The little kitten who had once needed someone to follow his cries into the darkness was growing into a confident and loving companion.
Rocky will remain with Holly until he is old enough to be neutered. Once he is ready, he will be able to begin the next chapter of his life with a permanent family.
From a Dark Drainpipe to a Loving Home
Not long ago, Rocky was trapped beneath heavy rocks, crying into the darkness and hoping someone would hear him.
Today, he wakes up in a warm, comfortable bed. He has a full bowl of food, a heartbeat stuffed toy to snuggle against, and a foster mother who refused to ignore his cries.
His rescue began with two people willing to keep searching when the darkness made the task difficult.
Their determination gave a tiny kitten the opportunity to grow, play, and experience the comfort every young animal deserves.

Rocky’s story is a reminder that even the smallest cries for help deserve attention.
Sometimes, a life can change because someone hears a sound in the darkness and decides not to walk away.
