Eighteen dogs have escaped an uncertain future after three former dog meat wholesalers in Nagaland, India, made the life-changing decision to leave the trade. After more than 20 years in the business, they voluntarily surrendered the final 18 dogs in their possession, giving the animals a chance to live safely instead of facing slaughter.

Following the rescue, the dogs received immediate veterinary attention. Each animal was carefully examined, vaccinated, microchipped, and provided with medical treatment when necessary. Thanks to the efforts of rescuers and compassionate community members, several dogs were adopted almost immediately. The remaining animals were moved to safety and began their journey toward recovery and permanent homes.
This rescue represents more than a second chance for 18 dogs. It also highlights how practical support can encourage people to leave industries that harm animals.

The three former wholesalers are now starting a new chapter through Models for Change, a livelihood transition program launched in Nagaland in 2025 by Pro Rural, with support from Humane World for Animals India. The initiative helps former dog meat vendors develop alternative businesses, including mushroom farming and pickle production.

So far, 30 women have successfully left the dog meat trade through the program, with another 30 expected to participate. These opportunities help families establish more sustainable sources of income while reducing their dependence on the trade.
For many vendors, walking away from a familiar business is not easy. When their families rely on the money they earn, finding another livelihood can be challenging. By offering practical alternatives, the program addresses these financial difficulties while encouraging more compassionate choices for animals.

The decision made by the three wholesalers demonstrates how meaningful change becomes possible when people have access to new opportunities. By surrendering the 18 dogs, they helped save the animals and potentially prevented them from entering the slaughter trade.

Humane World for Animals India continues working alongside local organizations, communities, and law enforcement agencies to promote animal welfare and support lasting change.
After their rescue, all 18 dogs were transported to animal shelters in Assam. Several have already found loving families, while others are receiving care as they await adoption.

Their story is a powerful reminder that compassion, cooperation, and sustainable livelihood opportunities can transform lives. For these 18 dogs, a future filled with safety, kindness, and love is finally within reach.
