For 17 years, Lucy knew the comfort of one home and the love of the person who cared for her. But when her longtime owner entered hospice care, the senior cat suddenly faced an unexpected change that would alter the rest of her life.
On January 31, Lucy arrived at the Boone Area Humane Society in Iowa. At 17 years old, she had spent almost her entire life in familiar surroundings. Now, she had to adjust to unfamiliar smells, new people, and a completely different environment.

Her family made the difficult decision because they could no longer provide the care she needed. They hoped the shelter would help Lucy find another loving home.
Despite her age, Lucy quickly showed everyone that she still had plenty of personality. Shelter staff discovered that she was affectionate, friendly, and eager for attention. She also had an unusually loud meow.

The reason was simple: Lucy is mostly deaf and cannot clearly hear her own voice. Her loud meows became one of her most memorable characteristics, helping her communicate whenever she wanted affection or attention.
Although Lucy was somewhat overweight and had significant hearing loss, the shelter reported that she was generally in good health. She maintained a healthy appetite and enjoyed interacting with people.
Unfortunately, senior cats often face greater challenges finding adoptive families than younger kittens. Some potential adopters worry about age-related medical needs, but older cats can make wonderful companions, especially for people who appreciate a calmer household.
The Boone Area Humane Society knew Lucy deserved a chance. On February 16, the shelter shared her story on Facebook, hoping someone would look beyond her age and recognize her loving personality.
The response was extraordinary. Adoption inquiries arrived within hours, and by the following morning, the shelter had received nine applications. One interested person even offered to travel approximately four hours to meet Lucy. Her story eventually attracted more than 196,000 views.

Most importantly, the attention helped Lucy find a new family. On February 17, just one day after her story was widely shared, she was adopted. She had spent only 19 days at the shelter.
Lucy’s journey reminds us that older animals deserve love, comfort, and a safe place to spend their remaining years. Sometimes, unexpected circumstances separate pets from the families they have known for years, but kindness can open the door to another beginning.
