In Bonita Springs, Florida, a disturbing discovery outside a homeowner’s property led to a criminal investigation that ultimately resulted in a 20-year prison sentence for Robert James Luther III, 38. The case involved the deaths of two cats, allegations of stalking, and evidence that helped prosecutors establish their case in court.

The investigation began on March 13, 2025, when a homeowner discovered a suspicious box near his mailbox. According to the Lee County State Attorney’s Office, the discovery was connected to two cats. The homeowner and his wife had reportedly experienced threats involving Luther for more than a year, making the incident particularly concerning.

Authorities began examining the circumstances surrounding the discovery and investigating who might be responsible. Investigators reportedly determined that Luther’s van had been in the area around the time of the incident. He was later located at a nearby car wash, where surveillance footage showed him cleaning his vehicle for approximately three hours.
The investigation continued as deputies gathered additional evidence. According to prosecutors, Luther was eventually found sitting in his van behind a closed business, where the victim identified him. During a search of the vehicle, investigators reportedly discovered several items, including firearms, a machete, a saw blade, dark clothing, and duct tape.

One of the most significant developments involved digital evidence. Prosecutors stated that investigators found a video on Luther’s phone depicting him shooting two cats in a wooded area. They said the animals matched the cats connected to the box discovered at the homeowner’s property.
The case went to trial in May. After three days of proceedings, a jury found Luther guilty of two counts of aggravated animal cruelty and two counts of aggravated stalking.
The court sentenced him to five years for each conviction, with all four sentences ordered to run consecutively. As a result, Luther received a total prison sentence of 20 years.
For the community, the case highlights the importance of protecting vulnerable animals and taking credible threats seriously. Animals depend on people to recognize signs of abuse and report concerns to the appropriate authorities.

The investigation also demonstrates how witness statements, surveillance footage, physical evidence, and digital records can work together to establish what happened.
Although the circumstances were deeply disturbing, the final verdict brought the legal proceedings to a conclusion. The case serves as a reminder that suspected animal cruelty should be reported responsibly and that threatening behavior deserves appropriate attention before situations escalate.
