The frightening incident happened on a Wednesday evening when residents were desperately evacuating an area near Cohasset and Campbellville. During the chaos, a resident’s truck broke down, forcing the owner to abandon the vehicle. Tragically, two adult Rottweilers and their puppies were left behind as the wildfire continued advancing.

The owner quickly informed emergency responders about the truck’s location. However, the intense flames made the area extremely dangerous and difficult to access. As the fire spread, rescuing the stranded animals seemed almost impossible. Their chances of survival grew increasingly uncertain.
But Trevor Skaggs, a volunteer with the North Valley Animal Disaster Group and a helicopter rescue technician with Butte County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue, refused to give up hope.

With assistance from Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea, Trevor was flown toward the remote location. Pilot Conner Smith found a suitable landing site more than a mile from the abandoned truck, allowing Trevor to continue the mission on foot.
Without hesitation, Trevor ran approximately 1.5 miles to reach the stranded dogs. When he finally arrived, he discovered the mother Rottweiler and her four puppies still alive. Exhausted and desperately thirsty, the frightened animals needed immediate help. Sadly, the puppies’ father had not survived the devastating fire.

Trevor quickly offered the surviving dogs water and small pieces of his protein bar. After helping them regain some strength, he carefully guided the mother and her puppies toward the waiting helicopter.

The relieved dog family was transported to Chico Airport, where members of the North Valley Animal Disaster Group welcomed them and arranged further medical care and emergency shelter.

Although the wildfire brought heartbreaking losses to the community, this incredible rescue offered a moment of hope amid the devastation. Trevor’s bravery demonstrated how compassion and determination can make a life-changing difference when vulnerable animals need help most.
