For years, Officer Rick “Doc” Broz dedicated himself to protecting animals in Lorain, Ohio. He rescued neglected dogs, reunited lost pets with their families, and worked to strengthen animal protection laws. However, one heartbreaking rescue would forever remain close to his heart: the story of Herbie, a Pit Bull mix who desperately needed someone to care.

In December 2012, Officer Broz responded to an anonymous report about an abandoned dog lying outside an empty house. What he discovered was devastating. Herbie was severely malnourished, with every rib and bone visible beneath his skin. One eye was blind, his skull was fractured, and his head was painfully swollen from a serious infection. Despite his terrible condition, the brave dog was still alive.
Officer Broz immediately rushed Herbie to a veterinary clinic, where the staff began emergency treatment. Although his survival was uncertain, Herbie gradually showed signs of improvement. His swelling decreased, his appetite returned, and he began gaining weight. Soon, he was enjoying outdoor walks and wagging his tail with excitement.
Sadly, just when things seemed to be improving, veterinarians discovered that Herbie had an inoperable form of cancer. The diagnosis was heartbreaking, but the medical team determined that he could still enjoy a comfortable life without pain.

Officer Broz refused to let Herbie spend his remaining days without love. During the week, Herbie stayed with the veterinary staff, while weekends became something special. Every Friday, Officer Broz brought him home, where he enjoyed a comfortable bed, delicious meals, relaxing afternoons, and plenty of affection.

Their bond grew stronger with every visit. Herbie finally had someone who made him feel safe, valued, and loved. Even as his future remained uncertain, he continued enjoying life’s simple pleasures, including walks outside and relaxing evenings with his devoted rescuer.

On March 1, 2013, Herbie passed away peacefully in Officer Broz’s arms. Although his life had been marked by unimaginable suffering, his final months were filled with kindness and companionship.

Herbie’s story touched animal lovers everywhere and reminded people why protecting vulnerable animals matters. In 2019, Officer Broz received recognition from the Humane Society of the United States for his dedication to animal protection.
Herbie could not be saved from cancer, but he experienced something truly precious before his final goodbye: unconditional love. Thanks to one compassionate officer, a forgotten dog discovered that he mattered.
