Holland Taylor, 83, Reveals Why She and Sarah Paulson, 51, Live Apart After 12 Years Together

Holland Taylor and Sarah Paulson have found a relationship arrangement that suits them, even though it differs from what many people expect from a long-term couple.

During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Taylor opened up about how she and Paulson, 51, manage their living arrangements while balancing their demanding professional lives.

“Well we do as much time as we possibly can, because work takes us apart constantly,” Taylor explained.

She added that she maintains an apartment in New York City, where Paulson stays whenever she visits.

The couple also has separate homes in Los Angeles, although their living arrangements have recently become a little different.

“In LA, I have a separate house from hers, but her new house, she hasn’t moved into,” Taylor explained.

She revealed that Paulson had been staying at her Los Angeles home for almost a year.

“It’s been almost a year since she’s been staying in my house in LA, too. So we’re together as much as geography and our jobs let us be.”

Taylor and Paulson first met in 2005, but their romantic relationship did not begin until early 2015. They publicly confirmed their relationship in March 2016.

During a 2024 appearance on the SmartLess podcast, Paulson discussed their decision to maintain separate homes.

“Yeah, we don’t live together. That’s the secret to it. We spend plenty of time together, but we don’t live in the same house.”

She explained that their arrangement had worked well throughout their relationship.

“[We’ve] been together for a long time now. And part of it has to do with, we’re together when we want to be and we’re not when we don’t.”

Although Paulson had previously lived with romantic partners, she explained that Taylor had less experience with sharing her home.

“So to get to be her age and sort of not having really cohabited with someone for a long time — I think it was a lot to sort of have me and all my me-ness in her space.”

When the possibility of living together in one house but sleeping in separate bedrooms was raised, Paulson made it clear that this arrangement would not suit her.

“No, because my favourite thing to do — we fall asleep holding hands. I like to sleep near her,” she said.
