Sir Tom Jones has spoken about a terrifying health experience that left him wondering whether his life was coming to an end.
The legendary Welsh singer, 86, was forced to postpone several performances during the US leg of his Come Gather Round tour after suddenly becoming unwell.
The cancellations surprised fans, especially because Jones had recently completed an extensive series of concerts across the country.
He was scheduled to perform in Los Angeles and San Diego on October 25 and 26. However, after receiving medical advice, he announced that both shows would have to be rescheduled.
At the time, the singer apologised to fans who had planned to attend, explaining that he had unexpectedly been struck by illness.
Jones had enjoyed performing 20 concerts across the United States in the preceding weeks before his health suddenly took a turn.
His announcement left supporters hoping the cancellations would only be temporary and that he would soon recover enough to return to the stage.
However, it has now emerged that his condition was much more serious than an ordinary case of flu.
Fans Have Followed Tom Jones’s Remarkable Career for Decades
The health scare comes after more than six decades in which Jones has established himself as one of the most recognisable voices in the music industry.
Born in Pontypridd, Wales, he rose to fame during the 1960s and went on to release several hugely successful songs, including It’s Not Unusual, What’s New Pussycat?, Delilah and She’s a Lady.
His career has spanned generations, with more than 100 million records sold worldwide. He has also earned numerous honours, including a Grammy Award and two Brit Awards.
In 2006, Queen Elizabeth II knighted Jones in recognition of his services to music.
Even after reaching his eighties, the singer has continued performing live and has previously made it clear that he has no intention of retiring simply because of his age.
Speaking to Yours magazine in 2024, he acknowledged that his voice had changed over the years, explaining: “As we get older, our voices drop, and we get more character in them.”
He also discussed how ageing had affected his vocal control but maintained that he still felt capable of delivering performances for his audiences.
In an interview with Metro, Jones suggested that he would only consider leaving music if he could no longer sing properly. He explained that he would not want to disappoint people who had purchased tickets to see him.
Tom Jones Recently Lost His Place on The Voice UK
The singer has also experienced a major change in his television career after ITV decided not to bring him back as a coach for the 2027 series of The Voice UK.
Jones had appeared on the programme on and off since its launch in 2012, becoming one of its most familiar personalities.
Last month, he addressed his departure in an Instagram post amid speculation about his future on the show, revealing that the decision had been made by the broadcaster.
During his final series, he mentored Welsh singer Cate McHugh, who eventually won the competition.
McHugh previously described being selected for Team Tom during the blind auditions as “absolutely undescribable,” expressing how special it was to have the opportunity to work alongside the music legend.
Although his time on the ITV programme has ended, Jones has continued fulfilling his touring commitments, including the American performances that were interrupted by his illness.
Tom Jones Apologises After Cancelling Concerts
Jones originally announced the postponements in a statement shared with fans on Instagram, explaining that he had made the decision after consulting his doctor.
“Following doctor’s advice, I unfortunately have to reschedule tonight’s show in Los Angeles and tomorrow’s show in San Diego,” he wrote.
He also reflected on the concerts he had completed in the weeks beforehand, saying: “I’ve had a great time these last few weeks, completing 20 shows and singing for wonderful audiences across the USA, but unexpectedly I’ve been hit with a bad case of the flu.”
The singer continued: “I’m truly sorry for any inconvenience caused. I look forward to seeing you all soon.”
He confirmed that tickets purchased for the original performances would remain valid for the rearranged dates. Fans unable to attend were advised to contact their original point of purchase to discuss refunds.
The San Diego concert was rescheduled for November 3 at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, while the Los Angeles performance was moved to November 4 at the Greek Theatre.
At the time, Jones did not reveal further details about his condition. Nevertheless, cancelling two performances at short notice raised concerns among his devoted supporters.

Tom Jones Returns to the Stage After a Week in Hospital
In more encouraging news, Jones has now returned to performing after spending a week receiving medical treatment at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.
According to the BBC, the 86-year-old was admitted to hospital after developing what he described as a “bad case of the flu.”
The illness forced him to cancel or rearrange several concerts, but he eventually returned to the stage at the Greek Theatre on Wednesday night, November 4.
During the performance, Jones spoke to the audience about his experience and praised the medical professionals who had cared for him.
“I must say this, in the UCLA, they really did a wonderful job. So I’m here,” he told the crowd.
The singer revealed that he had spent an entire week in hospital before medical staff asked him what he wanted to do next.
His answer showed just how important performing remained in his life.
“[The medical staff said] What do you want to do now? I was in there for a week. And I said, ‘I’ve got to get back on the stage’. This is where I belong. I can’t live without this, believe me,” he explained.
Jones is next scheduled to perform at the Yaamava’ Theater in San Bernardino, California, on Friday, November 6.
Tom Jones Feared His Life Was ‘Over’ After Heartbreaking Health Scare
However, it was the singer’s description of his thoughts during his hospital stay that revealed just how frightening the experience had been.
Speaking to the audience at the Greek Theatre, Jones admitted that there was a moment when he genuinely feared he might be approaching the end of his life.
Remembering what had gone through his mind, he said: “[I thought] Oh well, this is it, you’ve had a wonderful life, Tommy, but it’s over right now.”
The admission, reported by the BBC, provides a clearer understanding of the fear he experienced after being taken to hospital with flu.
It also makes his return to the stage particularly meaningful, especially considering his determination to continue performing after such a frightening experience.
For now, Jones appears focused on returning to the work he loves. As he told his audience, the stage is where he belongs.
His next scheduled performance is in California, and fans will be hoping the music legend can continue his tour following what has clearly been a difficult period.
