Last week, Stray Rescue of St. Louis received a call about a puppy left all alone in an alley. The Good Samaritans who discovered Cosmo had given him some water, but they were afraid to touch him because they already had a puppy at home and worried he might have parvovirus.
When Donna Lochmann, the rescue’s Chief Rescue Officer, arrived, she expected to find a lost puppy wandering around. Instead, she discovered the little dog collapsed on the ground, unable to even raise his head. She wrapped him in a towel and carried him to her Jeep, thankful that the callers had found him when they did.

After taking a closer look, Donna quickly realized how serious Cosmo’s condition was. Fleas were covering his tiny body, while his gums were almost completely white. He was suffering from severe anemia and urgently needed medical treatment.

There was no time to lose. While Donna was getting Cosmo safely settled inside the Jeep, another emergency call came in about a severely underweight dog lying beside the road. The location was just four minutes away, so Donna and the fragile puppy headed there together to help another animal in desperate need.

By the time Cosmo reached the shelter’s veterinary clinic, his condition was critical enough that he required a blood transfusion. Thankfully, he received the lifesaving treatment and was soon taken back to Stray Rescue, where staff could watch him closely.

Stray Rescue later shared that Cosmo was returning from the emergency vet after receiving his blood transfusion. The rescue said his condition was improving, although he still needed careful monitoring over the following days.

The other dog, Starlight, had also arrived in extremely poor shape. She was covered in motor oil, fleas and flea dirt. Like Cosmo, she was severely anemic because of the flea infestation and needed immediate care.

Both dogs arrived on the same rescue trip, and thankfully, both began showing signs of improvement. Starlight was officially ready for a foster home, and the rescue asked someone to step forward and give her a safe place to recover. The organization would provide her food, while she would need to return for regular weight checks. Staff described her as one of the sweetest dogs.
Cosmo was not completely out of danger yet, but his blood sugar levels had returned to normal. The rescue reported that he was feeling much better. He had not taken a walk yet, but that would hopefully be the next step in his recovery.

After everything Cosmo and Starlight had been through, watching both dogs move toward recovery is a touching reminder of how much timely rescue, medical treatment and compassionate care can change an animal’s life.
