Young Mama Cat Was Raising Four Kittens in a Basement — What She Did When Rescuers Arrived Melted Hearts
Pedals was still a young cat when she found herself caring for four newborn kittens in a cold basement. But when rescuers finally arrived, something unexpected happened. The tiny mother had been surviving in the basement of an apartment building in Washington Heights, Manhattan. Despite her young age, she was already doing everything possible to protect her babies.

Rescuers discovered Pedals and her kittens tucked behind discarded bicycle parts in a quiet corner. Having recently given birth, her little body was covered in grease from the basement. Surprisingly, all four newborns remained perfectly clean, showing how carefully their mother had been looking after them.
Pedals was nervous and constantly alert, watching her surroundings while staying close to her babies. She had spent her short life surviving, and keeping her kittens safe was her only priority.
Then came the moment that changed everything.
When rescuers placed a humane trap nearby, Pedals didn’t struggle or panic. She simply walked inside. The team was amazed by how calmly she accepted their help.

From that day forward, Pedals and her kittens received a warm, comfortable space, plenty of food, and the peaceful environment they desperately needed.
Her four babies, Sprocket, Axel, Rims, and Spoke, soon became known as the adorable “Bike Babies.” Their foster caregiver, Jill, welcomed the entire family into her home and surrounded them with love.
As Pedals settled in, her wonderful personality began to shine. Beneath her initial nervousness was an affectionate little cat who simply wanted to be loved.
She now eagerly asks for scratches, enjoys gentle kisses, and purrs whenever her caregivers enter the room. After spending so much time protecting her babies, she is finally experiencing the comfort of being cared for herself.
Meanwhile, her kittens are growing stronger, healthier, and more playful every day.
Thanks to the compassionate superintendent, dedicated rescuers, and loving foster family, Pedals and her babies now have a bright future. Soon, they will receive veterinary checkups before eventually finding loving forever homes.
