Those words reflected the heartbreak rescuers felt when they discovered Chimpi, a young Pit bull mix who had been left chained to an abandoned house. When the team from Stray Rescue of St. Louis arrived, they immediately noticed how thin and weak the one-year-old puppy was. His pale gums were another sign that he desperately needed help.

Chimpi was lying quietly on a blanket, but there were no food or water bowls anywhere around him. He had apparently been left alone to survive with almost nothing. Despite his difficult circumstances, however, Chimpi showed the rescuers something that touched their hearts.
When Donna, the rescue’s Chief Lifesaving Officer, approached him, the frightened dog stayed low to the ground and gently wagged his tail. It was as though he was trying to reassure her that he was friendly. His trusting eyes made it clear that, despite being neglected, he still wanted to believe that people could be kind.

Donna carefully released Chimpi from the chain that had kept him trapped at the abandoned property. Once he was finally free, she helped him into the rescue vehicle. Chimpi seemed to understand that his life was changing.
Inside the Jeep, his expression appeared completely different. His eyes were bright, and he looked happy to be away from the chain. For the rescuers, seeing his reaction made the difficult rescue even more meaningful.
The team promised Chimpi that he would never again have to experience the loneliness and suffering he had endured. He would no longer be left outside in the darkness without food, water or companionship.
Although Chimpi’s story began with neglect, his rescue marked the beginning of a new chapter. The people who saved him believe he deserves a loving home where he can feel safe, cared for and wanted every day.

After spending so much time alone, Chimpi finally has people fighting for his future. Now, all he needs is the chance to heal, learn what love feels like and become the happy family dog he was always meant to be.
