Stank was an elderly dog who had spent his final years being neglected and unwanted. One day, he made a life-changing decision: he left home and wandered along a rural road, hoping to find something better. Luckily, a young couple spotted him and immediately realized that the skinny senior needed help. They brought him to a nearby animal shelter, where staff began caring for him.

When they examined Stank, they discovered that his health had been badly neglected. His teeth were severely rotten, his breath was terrible, and the damage was so serious that part of his jaw had already deteriorated. He was also extremely thin and clearly needed medical attention.
A shelter volunteer named Serena soon discovered that Stank’s owner had been found. When the owner was contacted, they reportedly explained that Stank was very old, had started urinating inside the house, and suggested that the shelter simply euthanize him.
Serena could not accept that answer.
Instead of allowing Stank’s life to end, she decided to take him home and give him a chance. The senior dog was not completely innocent at first. After arriving at Serena’s home, he developed a habit of chasing the family’s chickens. However, it did not take long for him to settle down and become part of the family.
At the shelter, Stank had originally been called “Stinky Pete” because of his awful breath. Serena’s husband eventually shortened the name to “Stank,” and the unusual nickname quickly became a perfect fit.

His biggest challenge was his damaged teeth. They needed to be removed to give him a comfortable life, but performing anesthesia on a 17-year-old dog was risky. Even so, his dental condition was so severe that treatment was necessary.
Serena initially believed Stank would only have a short time left and expected him to become a hospice foster. Instead, he surprised everyone. A year and a half later, Stank is still enjoying life. He has excellent mobility, rarely has accidents indoors, and his hearing and eyesight remain remarkably good.
