For decades, he has remained one of Hollywood’s most familiar faces — an actor whose career has crossed generations, genres and some of the biggest films ever produced.

But before the fame, fortune, awards and worldwide recognition, his life was anything but easy.
A difficult childhood
Born in New York City in the mid-1960s to a filmmaker father and actress mother, Robert Downey Jr. grew up around the entertainment industry. Acting became part of his life almost from the beginning.
As a teenager, he studied at a performing arts school but eventually left high school to pursue acting full-time.
His career appeared promising from an early age, yet his childhood was marked by instability. Downey Jr. has spoken openly about being introduced to drugs and alcohol while he was still very young.

His father struggled with addiction, while his mother battled alcoholism. Downey Jr. later revealed that his father even introduced him to marijuana as a child — a decision his father eventually regretted deeply.
His early exposure to drugs became intertwined with his relationship with his father. Downey Jr. later explained that using drugs together had been his father’s way of expressing affection, even though the experience would have lasting consequences.
Despite the problems at home, Downey Jr. was already beginning to work as an actor. He appeared in some of his father’s movies and made his screen debut when he was only five years old.
By the age of seven, he had already taken on another acting role, giving an early indication of the career that would eventually make him famous.
A young actor finds his way
Downey Jr. also attended an acting program during the summer in upstate New York, where he continued developing his performance skills.
At school, he was remembered as a highly energetic child who often struggled to fit in. He was teased by older students but still managed to form friendships and remain popular with many classmates.
His parents eventually divorced, changing his family life once again. He moved to New York City with his mother, while his sister remained with their father.
As a teenager, he attended several schools before ultimately leaving education behind and committing himself completely to acting.
That decision soon began paying off.
During the 1980s and early 1990s, Downey Jr. became one of Hollywood’s promising young stars. Movies such as Weird Science and Less Than Zero helped establish his reputation and brought him increasing attention.
But while his career was moving forward, his personal life was becoming increasingly unstable.
His relationship with actress Sarah Jessica Parker lasted several years. She tried to provide stability in his life, but his substance abuse problems continued to grow.
Trouble in the 1990s
Parker avoided drugs and rarely drank, making her lifestyle very different from Downey Jr.’s increasingly troubled one.
Eventually, their relationship ended, and his addiction problems became even more severe.
By the middle of the 1990s, arrests, court proceedings and rehabilitation attempts had become part of his life.
In 1996, police arrested Downey Jr. after reportedly stopping him in Malibu for speeding and suspected impaired driving. Authorities reportedly found heroin, cocaine and an unloaded handgun in his vehicle.
Another strange incident occurred when he entered a stranger’s home, removed his clothing and fell asleep in a bed.
His situation continued to deteriorate, and his legal problems eventually led to prison.
Looking back on that period, Downey Jr. later described prison as one of the most dangerous places he had ever experienced.
A second chance
After being released in 2000, Downey Jr.’s recovery was not immediate. He experienced setbacks and continued struggling before eventually turning his life around.
By 2003, he had achieved sobriety, marking one of the most important turning points of his life.
He rebuilt his personal life, remarried and welcomed more children. At the same time, he gradually earned Hollywood’s trust again and began rebuilding the career that addiction had nearly destroyed.
His family became a major part of his new life, although he later faced another painful challenge when his eldest son, Indio, struggled with addiction.
Downey Jr. expressed hope that his son could overcome the problem and become another example of successful recovery.

Today, Robert Downey Jr. is recognized around the world as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
His career has brought him major awards and international success, including an Academy Award, a Daytime Emmy Award, three Golden Globe Awards and two BAFTA Awards.
He also became the world’s highest-paid actor for three consecutive years from 2013 through 2015.
His journey from childhood exposure to addiction, through arrests and prison, to sobriety and blockbuster success is one of Hollywood’s most extraordinary comeback stories.
His past remains part of his story, but it did not determine how his story would end.
