A tiny puppy abandoned by his owners was discovered carrying a small piece of bread around—and incredibly, he offered it to the people who came to rescue him.
Little Gunnar was severely anemic and suffering from tick-bite fever and painful eye infections. Considering how vulnerable he was, the fact that he survived at all was a miracle.
Sidewalk Specials learned that Gunnar’s owners in the Groendal township of Franschoek, South Africa, could not afford to have his mother sterilized. She was eventually sent away, while her puppies were surrendered for euthanasia.
Somehow, Gunnar was overlooked.
He was left behind to survive completely on his own.
By the time Sidewalk Specials arrived, he had reportedly spent an entire week alone in the cold.
Rachael from Sidewalk Specials said they arrived just in time to save him. When rescuers picked Gunnar up, his little tail was already wagging.
Despite everything he had endured, his positive spirit seemed to keep him going.
Soon, Gunnar found a safe home with Freya and her partner.
Three years later, that once-frightened puppy has completely transformed. He has grown into a happy little “rockstar” with a hilarious obsession with rocks, and he now helps his family care for foster dogs.
From being abandoned and left alone in the cold to becoming a beloved member of a family, Gunnar’s transformation is truly incredible.
His life began with uncertainty, but today he has the love, safety and happiness he always deserved.
