Thirty-six Border Collies have been rescued from a Florida home after allegedly being kept inside for as long as four years without being allowed outdoors. The dogs were covered in layers of dirt and feces and were reportedly living in extremely poor conditions.
But one detail outside the house has drawn particular attention. Above the front door was a beautiful stained-glass window showing Border Collies happily walking through a green meadow alongside sheep.

The heartbreaking contrast between the beautiful artwork and the condition of the rescued dogs has deeply affected people in the Palm City neighborhood.
Authorities had reportedly been investigating the situation for years. Neighbors had raised concerns about the dogs several times, but officials could not legally enter the property without permission from the owner or sufficient probable cause.

A stained-glass window showing Border Collies was positioned above the home’s front entrance.
Since 2020, multiple agencies had reportedly visited the property and made efforts to determine what was happening inside. At one point, the homeowner allegedly constructed a fence around the property to prevent sheriff’s deputies from gaining access.
Eventually, authorities secured a search warrant. When they entered the home this week, what they discovered was reportedly even worse than they had expected.

The dogs were brought outside one by one, revealing the terrible condition they had been living in.
“The animals themselves, the dogs, which are supposed to be Border Collies, beautiful dogs, are covered in feces,” Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek told reporters. “They’re supposed to be white and black dogs, and they’re solid black from the feces.”

The conditions were so severe that deputies and animal services personnel had to wear protective Tyvek suits while removing the animals from the property.

Authorities alleged that the dogs had deliberately been kept confined inside the home and were not being given access to the outdoors.
“She, on purpose, kept these dogs trapped in this jail that she has behind us and abused them, for lack of a better word,” Sheriff John Budensiek said.

The homeowner, 62-year-old Paige O’Donnell, was arrested and faces 72 charges. The charges include 36 felony counts of animal cruelty and 36 misdemeanor counts related to allegedly failing to provide the dogs with proper exercise or access to air.
A judge set her total bond at $275,000 and ordered her not to own or possess animals while out on bond.
The case has been particularly heartbreaking because O’Donnell was reportedly a longtime AKC Border Collie breeder who had previously been known for having “lovely dogs,” according to a commenter on the sheriff’s office Facebook page.
The rescued dogs are now in the care of the Humane Society of Treasure Coast. They are receiving veterinary attention, food, grooming and other necessary care while their individual conditions are assessed.
For years, these dogs apparently knew little beyond the walls of the home where they were confined.
Now, they are finally outside.
They have the opportunity to experience fresh air, proper care and freedom for the first time in years.
And perhaps one day, they can finally live the kind of peaceful and happy life represented in the beautiful stained-glass window above the front door.
