Last week, a New York resident went outside to collect an Amazon delivery when they noticed a gray tabby cat curled quietly on top of the package. At first, the cat appeared to be simply resting, but it soon became clear that he was much older than he looked. His extreme tiredness suggested that something might be seriously wrong.
They contacted PuppyKittyNYCity, and rescuers arrived as quickly as they could.
When the rescuers reached the home, they immediately realized the stray cat was elderly and unwell. They carefully lifted him from the package and placed him safely inside a carrier.
The team was heartbroken by how withdrawn and exhausted he seemed. They could only wonder what he had experienced before finally ending up on that doorstep.
“He showed up on a stranger’s porch in terrible condition, with nothing but some Amazon packages to curl up on,” PKNYC shared. “We have no idea how long he had been struggling before he finally found help.”
The rescuers took him back to PKNYC’s headquarters for a complete medical examination. There, they discovered that the sweet cat, whom they named Maribel, was even more seriously ill than they had initially realized.
“Maribel is slowly improving, but we discovered he has heart disease and asthma in addition to recovering from being sick,” the rescue reported.

Poor Maribel was physically struggling and needed immediate hospitalization. Although the rescue team began his treatment right away, the busy shelter environment was also taking an emotional toll on him.
“The shelter is not where we want him to spend his days,” the rescue explained. “He deserves a soft bed, a quiet home and someone to remind him that his best days can still be ahead of him.”
Now that Maribel’s medical treatment is underway, the PKNYC team is urgently hoping to find him a foster home. He has been making gradual progress, and rescuers believe that a peaceful, comfortable home would give him the best environment for continued recovery.
Maribel has already made remarkable progress in just one week, but his journey is not finished. He is still waiting for the loving home he deserves, while his rescuers continue searching for someone willing to give him that second chance.
“First, he waited on Amazon packages for someone to save him,” PKNYC wrote. “Now he waits in a cage for someone to take him home.”
