Left Behind on a Brooklyn Sidewalk, This Cat Finds Comfort by Holding His Rescuer’s Hand

Truly Scrumptious, affectionately called Truly, is a beautiful four-year-old gray cat whose heartbreaking journey proves how one small act of kindness can change an animal’s life forever. Adopted as a kitten in 2022 through Whiskers-A-GoGo, a volunteer-run cat rescue in Brooklyn, New York, Truly was supposed to enjoy a lifetime of love and security. Unfortunately, his life took a difficult turn.

About a year after his adoption, a relationship breakup changed his circumstances. His former owner’s boyfriend kept him, despite the original adoption agreement. Later, he moved into an apartment that prohibited pets, leaving Truly with his elderly mother. When her landlord discovered the cat, she faced an impossible situation.

With nowhere else to turn, the elderly woman placed Truly inside a granny cart, covered him with shopping bags, and prepared to leave him on the street. The frightened cat was suddenly at risk of losing everything familiar to him.

Thankfully, an unexpected encounter changed his fate. While walking past Good Home Cat Adoptions in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, the woman came across Bronwen, a dedicated rescuer who immediately took Truly into her care.

Bronwen could have sent him directly to a city shelter, but she decided to scan him for a microchip first. That simple decision revealed something extraordinary. Truly’s microchip was registered to Whiskers-A-GoGo, the same rescue that had arranged his adoption as a kitten.

The rescue quickly arranged to bring him back. After receiving a thorough health check, Truly was placed in a foster home where he could finally begin recovering from his unsettling experiences.

At first, he was frightened, quiet, and withdrawn. After being passed between different homes, he needed time to understand that he was safe. Gradually, over three weeks, his confidence returned, revealing the affectionate and playful personality his rescuers remembered.

Today, Truly loves cuddling, sleeping beside his people, and playing fetch with his favorite mouse toys. He even brings his toys back for another throw. His most heartwarming habit is gently placing his paws on his human companion’s hands during cuddles, making every affectionate moment feel special.

Now, Truly is searching for a permanent family that will cherish him for the rest of his life. His rescue story highlights the importance of microchipping pets and giving abandoned animals another chance.
