From Insecure Teenager to Royal TV Star—Her Life Nearly Ended After Childbirth

Before royal titles, international headlines and millions of admirers, Meghan Markle was simply a young girl warming up microwave meals and trying to understand where she belonged.

Born in Los Angeles to a Black mother and a white father, Meghan did not grow up feeling like someone destined for Hollywood or royalty. Instead, she often struggled with her identity and felt caught between different worlds. She sometimes felt out of place at school, uncomfortable with conventional beauty standards and frustrated by strangers making assumptions about her family.

“My dad is Caucasian and my mom is African American. I’m half Black and half white,” she once explained.

Those early experiences became an important part of her story, shaping how she viewed herself and helping her develop the confidence she would eventually need when the world began paying attention to her.

Raised on TV Dinners and Tough Questions

Meghan has described herself as a “latchkey kid,” meaning she often returned home to an empty house while her parents were working long hours. Her mother, Doria Ragland, worked as a makeup artist, while her father, Thomas Markle Sr., worked in television.

“I grew up with a lot of fast food and also a lot of TV tray dinners,” she recalled.

“Watching ‘Jeopardy!’ and having a lot of microwaveable kids’ meals… that was normal.”

However, her father has disputed parts of her description of childhood. He has said that her memories, particularly those involving her meals and daily routine, do not match his recollection.

Thomas also claimed that he personally picked Meghan up from school every day or arranged for a car to collect her whenever his work schedule made it difficult.

One experience Meghan remembers particularly clearly was the attention she and her mother attracted whenever they went out together. Strangers often stared at them or questioned their relationship because of their different skin tones.

A Dark-Skinned Mom

Meghan has explained that people sometimes assumed she was white. This led to uncomfortable situations in which strangers questioned how a light-skinned girl could have a dark-skinned mother.

Her mother once recalled being mistaken for Meghan’s nanny while they were shopping.

“I just remember my mom telling me stories about taking me [to] the grocery store and a woman going, ‘Whose child is that?’ She’s like, ‘It’s my child.’ ‘No, you must be the nanny. Where’s her mom?’” Meghan said.

After her parents separated, Meghan continued spending time with both of them until she was nine. Her father then became her primary caregiver, while her mother concentrated on developing her career.

Netflix

Meghan lived with her father until she left for college at eighteen.

Meanwhile, Doria moved to a predominantly Black neighborhood outside the Valley. Although the change was significant, she found support among a close-knit group of women who helped her raise Meghan.

“We had a nice network of women who really helped me raise Meg. She was always so easy to get along with, congenial, making friends. She was a very empathic child, very mature,” Doria said in an episode of Meghan’s Netflix series.

Their relationship was also different from what some people might expect between a mother and daughter.

“I remember asking [her] did I feel like her mom,” Doria recalled, “and she told me I felt like her older, controlling sister.”

“I Was Not the Pretty One”

Like many teenagers, Meghan experienced insecurities while growing up. However, feeling caught between different racial and social expectations made those years particularly challenging.

“I was a big nerd growing up,” she admitted. “People don’t understand that about me. Like, I was not the pretty one. My identity was wrapped up in being the smart one.”

Her intelligence became one of her greatest strengths. At just 11 years old, she challenged a sexist television commercial and successfully pushed for a change.

Although her family experienced financial limitations, Meghan still remembers certain affordable outings as special occasions.

“I grew up on the $4.99 salad bar at Sizzler,” she recalled. “I knew how hard my parents worked to afford this… and I felt lucky.”

She also remembered that when her Girl Scout troop celebrated special occasions with dinner, they often visited the same salad bar or The Old Spaghetti Factory because those were places their families could afford.

Their circumstances eventually changed when her father won $750,000 in the lottery.

According to her half-brother, the money helped Meghan access better schools and training, giving her more opportunities to pursue her ambitions.

“That money allowed [her] to go to the best schools and get the best training,” he said. “[She] doesn’t stop until she gets what she wants.”

Early Hustle, Hollywood Dreams

Meghan began dreaming about a successful future at a very young age.

When she was 11, she wrote a letter to her school principal promising that she would make their school famous once she became successful.

She also started working while she was still a teenager. By 13, she had taken on several small jobs, including babysitting and selling doughnuts at a stand called Little Orbit.

Her interest in acting developed partly through her father’s television work. Thomas was a lighting director on the sitcom Married… with Children, and Meghan sometimes spent time around the show’s production set.

Looking back, she described it humorously as:

“A really funny and perverse place for a little girl in a Catholic school uniform to grow up.”

Even while exploring acting, however, Meghan was still trying to understand her identity and find her place in the world.

“I Wasn’t Black Enough”

In a blog post years later, Meghan reflected on how difficult her teenage years had been.

“My teens were even worse — grappling with how to fit in,” she wrote. “Being biracial, I fell somewhere in between.”

Those feelings followed her into her early acting career. She sometimes struggled to find roles because casting professionals viewed her as ethnically ambiguous.

As she explained:

“I wasn’t black enough for the black roles and I wasn’t white enough for the white ones.”

By her twenties, the pressure to meet other people’s expectations had become exhausting.

“It was a constant battle with myself… to be as cool/as hip/as smart/as ‘whatever’ as everyone else.”

Eventually, her perspective began to change.

On her 33rd birthday, Meghan shared a more positive reflection about her life and personal growth.

“I am 33 years old today. And I am happy,” she wrote.

She also reflected on the importance of learning to treat yourself with kindness and understanding, explaining that reaching a place of happiness can take time.

From Suits to St. George’s Chapel

The young girl who once struggled to feel accepted eventually became widely recognized through her role as Rachel Zane in the television series Suits.

Her career brought new opportunities, and her personal life changed dramatically when she met Prince Harry in 2016.

Two years later, the couple married at Windsor Castle in a ceremony watched by millions around the world. Meghan became the Duchess of Sussex, entering a very different life from the one she had known growing up.

By 2021, she and Harry were parents to two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

However, life in the public eye also brought personal challenges, including serious health difficulties following childbirth.

A Postpartum Nightmare

In April 2025, Meghan launched her podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder. During its first episode, she spoke with Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd about a frightening medical experience they had both faced after giving birth.

Meghan revealed that both women had experienced postpartum preeclampsia, a serious condition that can develop after childbirth.

“We both had very similar experiences — though we didn’t know each other at the time — with postpartum,” she told Wolfe Herd. “We both had preeclampsia. Postpartum preeclampsia. It’s so rare and so scary.”

She explained that even while dealing with frightening medical complications, mothers often feel pressure to continue looking after everyone around them, particularly their children.

“In the quiet, you’re still trying to show up for people — mostly for your children — but those things are huge medical scares.”

Wolfe Herd agreed with the seriousness of the experience.

“I mean life or death, truly,” she said.

Meghan recovered, but she later faced another deeply personal loss. She experienced a miscarriage, which she eventually discussed in an emotional essay.

From inexpensive family dinners to royal appearances, Meghan Markle’s life has included experiences far removed from the fairy-tale image often associated with royalty.

Her journey reflects the struggles of a woman who spent years trying to understand her identity, overcome personal insecurities and find her place in a world that frequently tried to define her.

Today, with her own platform, a microphone and two children by her side, Meghan continues sharing her experiences in her own words and on her own terms.
